Odd Hard Drive Performance.

Ok, so i have a 1TB WD Black hard drive as storage for misc stuff, like little programs and what not that doesn't require speed.

Lately, the drive has seemed very slow response time. For example, I will try to open Ventrilo, which is installed on the drive, and it will take about 15 seconds to open. It won't do it all the time, just randomly. Sometimes the drive is very responsive, sometimes the drive isn't. I have disabled all power managent/sleep settings on the hard drives, so they shouldn't be turning off.
 
I have the same problem with the 80gig sata1 seagate. Replaced with 64gig ssd and it was super fast so i threw away the old hdd.
 
that sounds scary :eek: backup asap!

run hdd diagnostics like spinrite 6.0 (deep analysis of platter surface, can be very slow) or run western digital's data lifeguard diagnostics software [here]

RMA the thing - take advantage of that 5 year warranty! :p

Fully agree. Backup asap as it sounds like you have something seriously wrong with your drive. If you already have a backup good on you :)
 
Ran both of those and they didn't show anything wrong...

For example, after like, my pc has been idle, or I have been playing a game, I exit whatever I was doing, and if I go to open a program on the 1TB drive, it will take a long time to open, like 15 seconds. If I open another program right after that, on the same drive, it will open instantly. Everything on the C drive opens fast too. Just the 1TB has a delay when initially accessing it.

If it just started to occur lately, than I would do what other people are saying and back it up. Same thing happened with one of my old 500gb IDE drives and nothing detected it wrong but it took a while to boot up and some prgrams took a while to load. I just assumed it was a bad sector or something along those lines so I rma'd it got the same model drive back and worked perfectly fine.

Well, everything is backed up, so I'm not really worried about. I just don't think it's a bad drive. I think it is on the software level.

if it's just software, it could only mean your O.S. or Ventrilo, think about re-installing them. last variable to look at would be your bios settings or may possibly need an update.

those excessive delays in accessing, and your read/write works as confirmed by testing, could be that your hard drive's armature has an intermittent problem.

all noob guesses here!

Ya, does it with any program on the drive. Come to think of it, it started happening after I removed another SATA drive.
