DigiTimes is reporting that NVIDIA has placed urgent orders with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company for GF 8800 parts in order to meet increasing demand.

Nvidia has placed urgent orders with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for GeForce 8000 GTX and GTS series chips as demand for graphics cards supporting DirectX 10 is picking up, according to market sources, as cited by the Chinese-language Commercial Times.

Hmm...looks like these are for 80nm parts, which means NVIDIA is either getting ready to massively ramp up their mainstream parts, or they're getting ready for the 80nm G80 shrink that will kick ATI in the nuts right around the time R600 launches. I'd bank on it being a little bit of both. Looks like last year all over again if you ask me.

Ya this means other cards will be more available, instead of on back order like the 7950 for almost 2 months.

I would imagine that they were surprised by the increasing demand for the 7xxx series cards. Despite not competing that well with the 1900 cards from ATI, and being dominated by the new 8800 gear, card makers seem to continue to release new models and consumers seem to keep buying them.

However, I really do hope that this order is for the 8900 cards (G80 core at 80nm???), or so that Nvidia can offer some sweet deals and good supply on something like an 8600.
