No 4ghz from intel?

Intel stops their 4 ghz processor delvelopment instead, they want to make the prodessors do more with out cranking up the clock speed. Now heres my concern if that happends and intel comes out with bunch of ways of shortcuts in their processors for Intel only, wouldn't that split up PCs in to two catagories where software developers and game makers to develope two versions of their software, one for intel and one for AMD. i heard similar thing about Nvidia and ATI. any thoughts?

nah, I doubt it. if intel adds any new instructions either AMD will jump on it and adopt them to or they probably just won't catch on and be used by game developers. Not only that but if you look back at intel architecture they still support all the orignal 8086 instructions, changes are kinda slow and even when they change it is just to help programmers (although w/ a cisc proc. this just makes it more confusing :D )

Management at Intel was known in the past for doing the right thing for the right technical reasons. Things were done on merit, and not to win slideshow beauty contests. For over twenty years, Intel did the right thing technically, and it worked out in the marketplace because it was the best. It is easy to sell when you have the best thing going.

But the Pentium 4 represented a sea-change. Technical merit took the back seat to other concerns. From the outside, it looks to me like the Pentium 4 was designed to hit a number that sold well, not to be the best. This was the critical failure that is going to devastate Intel. Mike Magee came up with the term marchitecture, meaning marketing driving architecture, for a reason.

i read an article about how intel wants to have 2 4ghz chip running instead of having a 8ghz chip, but if you look at dual xeons, one processor has most of the load and other just sits around. most of the softwares out there doesnt take advantage of dual CPUs. i wonder if some day 2 x 4ghz == 8ghz

a wire's characteristic impedence at around 3GHz starts to get really high. At 18GHz it's completely unusable.

what this means is, 8GHz can't be done with a processor that has those little copper pins sticking into the sockets, they are doing the right thing by making there CPU's do more with less clock cycles like AMD has been doing all along.

in otherwords, with the current materials they are using, there IS a limitation on how many GHz they can do. SO they gotta take full advantage of what they have...
