I'm trying to install ubuntu/or fedora(tried both) on my rig here. Now from what I've researched these OS'es have issues with SATA/IDE. I have an SATA hdd and an IDE DVDRW. I've tried changing my bios setup to IDE/IDE, AHCI, disabling sata controller etc... Now when I disable the SATA controller the installer boots fine, but won't find any hdd. However any thing else I try and the installer fails to run. Any help on this matter would be much appreciated...

PS. Regardless of the OS, my computer WILL NOT boot from the dvdrw, it always defaults to the hdd NO MATTER HOW ITS SETUP IN BIOS. Whats up with that?
 
I can't seem to find the "problem" in your post.

Is it that you can't get the CD to boot without disabling the SATA controller?
 
Ubuntu has no problem with SATA.

I have 2 Sata HD's and 2 SATA DVD/RW drives.


Are you sure there just isnt something wrong with your burn? If the there is a problem with the cd, it would go back to HD boot. Could be your problem.
 
UBUNTU installer will NOT load, it just errors out. When I disable sata controller, the installer works fine but of course it doesnt see my SATA HDD. The problem is using UBUNTU with a SATA HDD and an IDE DVDRW. Just lookin for a fix.
 
My guess would be the IDE optical drive. Well, more to the point, the addon IDE controller on the motherboard. I don't remember offhand what controller the IP35 uses for IDE but if it's the never-to-be-damned-enough JMicron controller, that could be your problem.

I did get the built in JMicron controller to work with an IDE optical with my Gigabyte 965P-DS3 to install Fedora Core 6 back when I only had IDE opticals. However, nine out of ten times the optical would not be recognized by the OS. This finally drove me to get a SATA DVD burner and I haven't looked back since.

 
yea that seems to be the only solution...as with the case in linux you build your hardware around the OS :)
 
yer JMicron are a PIG!!!
Cheap-ass POS PATA controllers! crap on windows as well

best bet is make a USB bootable Ubuntu install

ps don't blame linux for makers of hardware making CRAP and then not providing linux drivers
 
I haven't had a problem with my Abit IP35Pro board, with the Jmicron controller, as long as I use a kernel that is 2.6.21 or above (about a year old). I do have a sata dvd drive, but I have a hard drive on the Jmicron controller, and haven't had a problem yet.

I did my research when I bought my hardware, and haven't had any problems. The newest Ubuntu boots right up, and so did the last version.
 
Well, in case anyone else has issues similar to me. I was able to use UNetbootin @ http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ to solve my issue. I changed my bios settings to AHCI and used unetbootin to boot into the install for me. everything works fine im runnin ubuntu 8.04 x86 64
