Hi

I've not paid much attention to IT hardware developments recently and I was just looking at motherboards on an online store and discovered there are now "PCI Express" and "PCI X16" slots. What are these exactly - just a more modern PCI architecture? Also the motherboards with these didn't have AGP and PCI Express graphics cards were being advertised. Is PCI Express better/more efficient than AGP?

PCI-X would be a more modern PCI architecture. The only thing which PCIe shares with PCI is the way addresses are represented in memory.

Basically, PCI is a shared, parallel bus, whereas PCIe employs a serial, point-to-point (P2P) design, meaning that every PCIe card has always the same amount of bandwidth available, which can also be increased by adding more lanes to the card (X1 means one lane, X16 means 16 lanes, or 16 times the bandwidth of a single lane).

AGP is an asymmetric bus, meaning that it's really good at sending stuff from the CPU to the GPU, but not the other way around. PCIe is fully symmetric and also has lower latency than AGP.

So, yes, PCIe is better than AGP.

Elledan,

Many thanks, that was the kinda answer I was looking for, thanks for the information.

It was meant to be funny and still relevent. I really didn't think I was doing him harm by giving him what he asked for. They where yes and no questions. It could be said that he was implying that he was wanting an ellaborate answer, but he didn't outright say it.

Anyway, it was meant to be a joke, and I did answer his questions, so don't label me as a 'smart guy'. :)

Aww, where's the fun in that? ;)

P.S.

Thanks for actually answering his question in an informative and thorough way.
