New keyboard needed, Model M needs some rest

So my current keyboard line up is
- IBM Model M (1984) - prefer to save it from gaming abuse.
- Original Logitech G15 (random keys are dead and the back lighting is spotty at best..)

So I want a new keyboard to replace the Logitech - something mechanical and maybe ten keyless - will be used primarily for gaming (backlights / macros not a big deal) the switches are the main concern

I ordered the switch sampler from WASD but now i am more confused on what to go with, I thought i wanted reds but they feel kinda light (maybe i will get used to it)

Any recommendations ?
 
The switch sampler is really for a basic feel of the various switches' action, being mounted it will feel different due to; mounting, keyboard housing, key caps, modifications. But, yes, Cherry MX Reds are light keys.
 
Im all about them had about 10 of them and my favorite is the logitech g110 has just about everyhting you could want at a reasonable price

If you said your keyboard lineup consisted only of the (amazing) Model M, the choice would be easy to recommend: one of the Unicomp Ultra Classics, Classics or one of their other bucking spring ones. The closest you will find to a Model M in a modern keyboard.

As to something "more suitable" for gaming...heck, I game on my Model M (Lexmark non-detachable cable)...heh ;). Going for a Cherry mechanical switch, though...yah their "linear" switches (the Red and Black) feel nothing nothing like a buckling spring one. No click, are non-tactile and have a lighter actuation force. The Blacks have a heavier actuation force than Reds, however. Hardcore FPS freaks tend to prefer non-tactile switches.

If you really want something with tactile feedback in a Cherry key, there are Blue (clicky sound), White (similar to blue, but a higher actuation force), Brown (non-clicky) & Clear (similar to Brown, but a higher actuation force).

Note that none of the Cherry keys (tactile or not) will give you as high an actuation force as a buckling spring.

So comes down to: do you really want something mechanical designed specifically for gaming (Red or Black Cherry key keyboards) that you don't necessarily like using? Or a replacement for the Model M that can be easily replaced and you may feel more comfortable using (the Unicomp buckling springs)?
