I'm starting to shop around for a new pc that I'll be using to do lots of financial modeling (number crunching)... games aren't that big of a deal for me on this machine... maybe down the road I might add another monitor or so....

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Financial Modeling/Algorithmic Trading
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included? $1000 and no, not included
3) Where do you live? Chicago, IL
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific. CPU, RAM, Case, Power Supply, Motherboard, Cooling, Hard Drive, DVD Drive
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model. Have a Radeon 2600 XT if it can be used
6) Will you be overclocking? Yes as long as I have stability... speed is good for number calculations
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have? 24inch Dell LCD 1900x1200
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Within the next week
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc. Fast and Stable
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? Yes
 
You've Listed no Storage do you have hard drives on hand?

Also what's the Max rez on that monitor?

I'd say do this.

If you're not gaming, there's no reason to upgrade the GPU.

Biggest problem with this setup is the PSU. That's a Sirtec made PSU so its quality isn't that good to begin with. For the price, I recommend getting the better quality BFG LS-550 550W PSU instead.

Other than that lowteckh's setup is an excellent place to start.

IMO, the Sonata III is not worth $140 since that 500W Earthwatts PSU only has 35A on the +12V rail and that case isn't worth more than $60. For $140, you can do a whole lot better in terms of PSU and case choice.
 
2600 XT is PCI-E


ok I realized there is one game I play every now and then... Team Fortress 2... but that seems to run on anything
 
Yes, the source engine is a bit old. But they still find ways to make a once decent system come to a crawl with their steam updates.
