I've been trying to setup a wireless network between my new laptop and other comp for two days now. The internet is working wirelessly and all, but I can't seem to get a workgroup setup so I can transfer files. I can see the other computer if I look in the workgroup, but when clicking on it, it just tells me I don't have permissions to access and that the network location couldn't be found or whatever. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I actually got the damn thing working yesterday, because somehow (I figure because of MS patches), the windows firewall became enabled on both machines when they had been turned off. It worked for a while and I managed to transfer 8gigs of data to my laptop. Haven't been able to get it to work since then, though, just get permission denied.
 
Bump. Nobody has any ideas? The damn thing keeps working on and off. But I DID manage to get it working a few times....so I really don't know what the deal is. It's completely random.
 
Do you have any other firewall software enabled? If you see the other PC - you should be able to view shared file/folders on it as long as they are both in the same workgroup.
 
This is all I could dig up - never really had that much trouble myself:
Symptom: Your WinXP, in a peer-to-peer network, may receive the following error when you double-click My Network Places/Computers Near Me: <Workgroup Name> is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource.
Resolution: 1) Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on one or more computers in the workgroup. To do that, go to properties of Local Area Connection>properties of Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)>General> Advanced>WINS, check Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP (If you have a DHCP-assigned IP address, select Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server ). 2) Make sure the Computer Browser service is started.

Are both machines XP? Home or Pro?

You may want to try running:
netsh int ip reset log.txt

That will reset your TCP/IP stack and then reboot - see if that helps.
 
Tried what you suggested, Chroma, and I get the exact same thing. I can see both my computers in the workgroup, but when I try and connect to my desktop from my laptop (or vice versa), it won't let me. Just says:

\\Arikara is not accessible. You might not have permission to access this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found."

Go into both PC's and check their network ID - "right click my computer > click properties > network ID (i think)" and make sure they are BOTH on the same workgroup "MSHOME" or "WORKGROUP" basically it is showing cached information and cant find the path to that machine anymore.
 
Yeah, they're both on the same workgroup (although not mshome or workgroup, I called it "network"). I have no idea what the issue is. Damn Windows networking...

I do the same sort of thing with my laptop and desktop, however my login name and password is the same for both PCs which takes care of all the security problems. What you can try to do, is on one PC, make a folder, right click, properties, sharing tab, share this folder, if the share name ends in a $ sign it will be hidden (some windows security update quite some time ago removed the default admin shares c$ and d$ because they were a pretty big security flaw for people that didnt have passwords set). Now go to your other PC and try to map a drive to that folder and use the login credentials from the pc that the share resides on. Open up explorer, click tools, map a network drive, choose a letter for it and then in the path, type \\pcname\share and then click Connect using a different user name. In here you would put as the user: pcname\username and then the password for the login for your other machine.
The other solution to this problem would be to make a modification to the security setting of the shared folder. Basically you want to grant access to the user of the other machine, and give full access to it. Right click on the folder, properties, security, add, then type in the user name that you use to log on to the other pc that you will be using to access this folder. You may have to precede the name with the PC name as well, but I'm not positive about that. Good luck..
