Hi!

I've recently upgraded the OS in my HTPC (also working as my file server) to Windows XP. One of my folders on the HTPC, which I mount as a network drive on my desktop, contains around 1200 folders. When the server was running 2k Server, the folder listing of the network drive took roughly ½ a second.... now, with xp, this process takes around 10-15 seconds! I got so annoyed that I reinstalled 2k server, and the problem disappeared, but I just couldn't do without some of the XP features so I re-upgraded.

Is there a way to switch off some stuff in XP to allow for faster folder listings from remote computers?

Only think I can think of is if you have the Thumbnail view set on that directory.
Also, is the indexing service running on the XP machine?
 
I've just enabled the indexing service (will see if that helps in a short while I guess) - thanks! It would make sense that this was enabled by default in 2k server!

I don't quite follow how the thumbnail view (which i don't use by the way) could increase the load time of the folder listing on the client (using thumbnails), when running XP on the server instead of 2k server.

Well all I know is Thumbnails on ANY drive will slow it down because it is rendering the view for the folder cover (the 4 little photos). Do that x your 1200 folders and I thought it could be a valid issue. ;)
 
indeed, but it would also have been an issue when the server was running 2k - shouldn't make any difference :)
 
My bad, I wasn't aware you were using thumbnail view in 2K since it's not on by default like it is in XP.

Dude ... :D

I have a fileserver ("server" from now on) which was running windows 2000 server, and is now running windows XP.

I have my desktop pc ("client" from now on) which is running windows XP.

On the client i have mounted a share on the server as a network drive. When the server was running w2k, accessing the network drive was instantaneous. When running windows XP on the server, there is a considerable wait on the client for the folder listing to appear.

Furthermore - I specifically stated that i am NOT using thumbnailing, and even if I were (on the client ... not the server where i always use the detailed listing form), it shouldn't be affected by the OS of the server, right?

Sorry if i wasn't 100% clear earlier.

I have now had the indexing service running on both client and server for most of the day, but to no avail.
