I can't get my Vista notebook's ethernet adapter to work any more. It seems to be functional, but it just won't... do anything.
Device Manager says it's working properly and it correctly senses whether a cable's connected or not, but it still won't connect to anything. I have tried connecting it to my router and to my desktop via crossover cable, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers old and new, carefully and logically troubleshooting settings, changing settings at random, and shouting at it.
The adapter shows up as a "tunnel adapter" in ipconfig with an IPv6 address, but no IPv4 address. Netsh also shows that the ethernet adapter has an IPv6 port assigned, but nothing for IPv4. My router doesn't support IPv6, but my desktop does, and my notebook won't connect to the desktop. The desktop is running XP.
When the two computers are connected, the desktop says that the connection is enabled and established, and tries sending a few packets every now and then but never gets a response.
On the notebook, the icon for the connection changes to indicate that it's connected, but the status window says that it's not connected through either IPv4 or IPv6, and there's no activity at all. Diagnose does nothing.
If I try and specify a fixed IP address for TCP/IPv4, the settings are cleared when I apply them and then check the configuration again. The name service provider field in Client for Microsoft Networks is blank, and every time I try to change it to anything else it gets cleared just like the IP settings.
I am at my wits' end here. The adapter did work before; I used it to transfer several gigabytes of files when I first got it. But now it's not working and I'm out of ideas. I can't find anything on Google except for a few people that might have a similar problem and can't figure it out either. The wireless adapter still works fine, but transferring several gigabytes of data over 54mbps wireless is awful!
