Built my own system. All parts are new. No OS yet.

ASUS motherboard (with no VGA slot or any video out)

EVGA GeForce 8800GT


So I boot up the PC, everything sounds like it is working fine. No beeps indicating any problems.

But, I plug a DVI cable from the 8800GT to my Samsung LCD, and here's what happens:

The screen says it found a digital signal and switches to it. But it's just a black screen.


What am I doing wrong?
 
Plug the monitor in before powering up.
See what happens when you power on.
 
Do you hear the POST beep? If not, is there an onboard speaker or a case speaker plugged in?

it would help if you listed your parts with model #s, etc.
 
Nope, no post beep.

Here are the parts:

ASUS P5N-E SLI Motherboard

EVGA GeForce 8800GT PCI-E x16 Graphics card

Western Digital 500GB HDD using SATA

Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz

Antec 550W True Power Supply

Antec 900 Case

Pioneer DVD/CD Burner

If you have both the 20/24 pin main ATX connector plugged in, AND the 4-Pin ATX12V P4 CPU connector plugged in, then the board should boot fine. You could try clearing the CMOS.

You could test the PSU. Jump start it (on the main atx connector, short the green wire with any black wire, using a paperclip), and see if it stays on. If not, then its a faulty PSU. If it works then proceed. ***NOTE: The paperclip trick is a simple, non-conclusive test for those that do not have PSU testers, multimeters, nor a spare PSU to test with.

Setup everything outside of the case, with the mobo on top of its cardboard box. Plug in only the essentials:
- PSU (namely: main 20/24-pin ATX connector and 4-pin ATX12V P4 CPU Connector)
- CPU w/ HSF
- Single stick of ram
- Videocard if there is no onboard video
- Monitor
- Keyboard
- System speaker/buzzer

* Use a screwdriver if your board doesnt have an onboard power switch. Jump the two power switch leads to turn the power on.

If it won't post, try different RAM slots. If it still won't post, pull out the ram (so no ram in the system) and listen for error beeps. If none, pull the vidcard and listen for error beeps. If none, re-seat the CPU/HSF and try again. Report back with results if you're still having issues.
 
One more thing, does it matter how I plug the power supply up to the parts? As in, my power supplies cables have 3 4-pin connectors on them.
