Need some Pentium 4 help

I haven't been following the computer hardware scene for a while now so I've forgotten what goes with what and so forth. When I did, I was all about AMD so I never really payed attention to Intel's products. One of my older computers just died and I have reason to believe the CPU is at fault. Now, I need a new processor ASAP but I just can't seem to figure things out. Right now in the computer, it has a Pentium 4 1.8GHz Socket 478 processor in an intel 845 chipset. I believe it has a 400MHz FSB... see I'm not too sure about these specs or what they mean anymore.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure the computer has a processor like this.

Now, can I just purchase a processor like this and stick it in?

My memory tells me it won't be running at 2.4GHz because of the slower RAM which will limit its speed. Is this correct? Or will the processor not work at all in the computer.

It depends on your motherboard. If your motherboard supports the 533Mhz FSB, then that chip would work. If not, you'll need a 400Mhz FSB chip instead. What model mobo do you have?

Oh, and don't get a willamette, in case you see one. Stick to the northwood chips.
