I need a password protectable file sharing over a network. I've used clark connect in the past but can't remember if it's passwordable(is that a word?). If it were it wouldnt' really matter because it's for a business and the company doesn't want to fork over the 125 bucks for the software is there a free solution? Computers are running windows xp home...eeek! Any help would be appreciated, we only need filesharing but have a extra p3 laying around with a 20 gig hd.

thanks,

Bob

About the only free solution is Linux running Samba like Clark Connect does. Any windows server based OS is gonna cost you.

but with samba I can have password protected file sharing so only user that know the pass can get in right?

What do you have to play with now? Meaning hardware AND software... There's ALL kinds of posibilities. And if you don't have anything yet, what's the budget for the project?

Budget for the project is null, it's a business with 20 employees, there providing the 20 gig hd, I'm having to provide the rest basically we can do w/out this in the managements eyes, but it's very convenient to have this rather than constantly e-mailing each other new revisions of files. I have everything needed as far as hardware goes mobo, case, psu, hd, ram, cpu, vid(hopefully wont be needed for long), and nic. I"m not afraid of installing a nix distro and figuring out samba can't be too hard plus I'm going to get paid to figure it out ;)

Thanks for your input thus far.

You might also look @ the SME Server. Kind of a pre-configured, linux based server, Details here Check it out. Basically a little fuller featured-type Clark Connect. and yes, it's got user AND group level password protection
