I need a new media storage unit. My current media "server" is full and slow. I will also be using this for my SageTV server/burner, edna, and FTP. I am looking at the following.

ABIT NF7-S2G Socket A (Socket 462) NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail Model #: NF7-S2G

Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200JD 320GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive -
Model #: WD3200JD

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ Barton 400MHz FSB Socket A Processor Model AXDA3000DKV4E

I plan on 4 of the 320GB drives, I'm done messing around with running out of space. I have RAM and vid card already.

Good choices? Bad choices? Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Well, that combo is pretty pricey for what you're getting. Comes out to about $180 for the mobo + cpu alone, with that kinda cash you should be scoping a newer generation of hardware. The abit NF7-S2G is not the same as the NF7-S 2.0 btw, its a pos with barely any bios/tweak options ;).

For that price you can pickup something faster like:

A64 socket 754 2800+ $120 shipped: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80698-1
Your choice of Socket 754 mobo: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductList.jsp?ThirdCategoryCode=011403&SortBy=A - or - http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=22
You can also scope some refurbished socket 754 mobo's if you like: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=list&SubCategory=22&type=Refurbished

The socket 754 is a viable htpc solution imho because its as fast as anything else in the a64 family (mhz per mhz), uses agp, and has loads of pci slots.

I agree with Johnny partially - I thought I heard that AMD was phasing out the 754s - or at least for the home user market. Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of upgrading to a newer generation? There are plenty of 939 boards that have AGP, but then again, PCI-X cards are generally in the same price range as their AGP counterparts, give or take a few dollars. Why upgrade to a new generation if you're only going to go halfway?

hehe...you guys have given me more questions to mull over than any solid info.

If the 754 is going bye-bye then that would not be any better off than what I picked in the first place. Anyone else have info on that?

I guess I'll be researching this a lot more.

Thanks fellas.

It's PCIe not PCI-X. PCI-X has been around for a long time and has nothing to do with PCIe.

Anyways at this point if you're new I wouldn't bother with socket A or s754 since both are at the end of their upgrade potential.

Sorry, got my terminology mixed up...
