SO I bought an EeePC a few months back with Xandros on it. Now, I like Xandros, and it worked out great for school, but its a pain in the ass to install programs on and have them run properly.

I want to keep SOME Linux distro on it, but I'm not sure what would work best for me at this point.

I want something light and simple, but with a desktop, and that has a good software base.

Specs:
Intel Mobile Processor
1Gb RAM
16Gb SSD
8"

What is small and light enough, but still compatible with a large range of software?

I wouldn't mind using Ubuntu on it, but I'm afraid that with the small SSD it might take up too much valuable space. (Granted I have a server and desktop computer with plenty of storage space on which I could utilize networked drives).

Also, since there is no CD drive in the EeePC, how can I make Ubuntu or Red Hat install from a USB thumb drive?
