I am looking for a road warrior type notebook, preferrable something small that's dockable, so it will be very portable when I'm out and about, and then when I take it home I can dock it and it will have pretty much full desktop capability. I also need long battery life, so Centrino is definitly a requirement. This will be replacing both my current heavy, short battery life notebook, and my desktop, so here is kind of a sum-up of the features I need:

-Can be a desktop replacement (dock)
-Light and Portable when off the dock
-Long Battery Life
-Decent Gaming (mostly CS and average games. I don't need the latest and greatest video card)
-Atleast 256mb RAM
-Atleast 30gb HD
-Preferrably a display under 15" to save weight, but 15" at max (NO WIDESCREENS!!!)
- DVD-ROM (Don't need a burner)
-Wireless integrated (Centrino, probably B/G)

I want to keep this under $2000, preferrably under $1500 if possible. I will be keeping this thing probably through college, and it will replace my desktop computer. I am not partial to any certain brand or manufacturer, so any suggestions are good.

I'd look into the IBM T series or R series.

the X series would be great, but I don't think it'd be able to do much outside of CS.

I got a X31 for many of the reason you are looking for. I tried Day of Defeat on it and with the lowest settings you will get about 20-30 FPS. While it is playable...It is definatly not a gamer. Comming from 80-100fps i just assume play games on my desktop. Though it plays UT2K4 demo supprisingly well, much better than the Half life engine games.

Mine technically isnt centrino because i opted to get a Dell 1150 (w/ Orinoco Gold Firmware) wireless card instead of the required intel wifi.

On 1 battery i will get around 5hrs with power savings settings, with the X30 Extended life battery It will get 8-10 hours(havent fully tested yet)

3.6lbs
512 MB ram
1.4Ghz
40 gb hd
$1440 shipped from reputable ebay seller (mine was new but he also sells refurbished)

Media slice docking station can be had for ~$180

I love mine, its great for class and wardriving.

Im not sure of the rules on ebay links so just do a search for any number of ibm products and look for seller "pc and camera" I was more than pleased with my expereince with this seller, laptop exactly as described, arrived 2 days earlier than it was supposed to.

I would say go with t40, if you want a 14" screen and SVGA+
i have a x30, it is very small! but well, I have problem identifying if that is x or t series. the only way to identify them is to see if they have trackpad or not. both are great!
if you want even smaller, get x40, 2.7lb, can have it for $1500, but only 20gbs.

I have had a lappy from every manufacturer over the years and I currently run with a Sony Vaio , You might want to take a close look at the products. They tend to cost a little more but the software that comes with them is full version stuff not the BS now buy it its been a year bundle crap that comes with many of the others.

I happend to be in the cellular business and the Sonys are the most compatible and trouble free relative to cdma wireless data as well as wifi in my experience.

One other question I had for people, how many of you are using a laptop with a 13" or smaller sized screen? The X series pretty much fits my needs, but im thinking the 12" screen is too small for general usage. T or F?

Go 15 or you will regrett it. The smaller screens are cute but loose their novelty pretty quick. !4 is a good comprimise

I ran 12.1 for a long time.

They're great screens...sure, a 15" is better for multimedia...I'd much rather watch DVDs on my M6805 than on my old x30. For general usage, it's fine. the screen is crisp, and 1024x768 on a 12" looks about as good as 1600x1200 on a 15".

it's when you get into 14" XGA monitors that it starts to look...well..not as good.

However, you said you wanted mobility. that says ultraportable to me; unless you can fit in a thin & light T series.

dell m600 is descent unit. Nice screen and centrino keeps it running for quite a while on battery.
