Need [H] Advice, Cheapest Racing Sim setup?

I'm at school in London with my laptop (dell 700m) and a dire urge to play racing sims. What's the cheapest way I could get a racing sim setup with wheel, pedals and capability for toggle/paddle shift?

I really have nothing except for stereo speakers and headphones and my laptop.

I was thinking of the following shopping list.

Used playstation 1
some kind of projector (cheap as can be)
cheap ps1 compatible wheel and pedals
my speakers or headhpones most likely
whatever gran turismo works with ps1
homemade stand and hardware to fix wheel and pedals relative to my chair

What do you guys think? I'd like to do this for less than $200 USD which is about 100 pounds over here.

Different console? n64? ps2? good deals online?
 
A racing wheel is nice to have, but its bulky and a pain in the ass to take on/off your desk. I have both a steering wheel/pedal set and a controller, I would just rather use the controller for most of the time. Plus any wheel/pedal set is gonna run you probably around $150 so there's most of your funds.
 
you might wanna go with a PS2...PSone is old and probably much harder to find
 
get a PS2 at the least for racing sims (along with your pc), get the logitech driving force pro (comes with paddle and sequential stick shift), buy a used car seat from the junk yank, some PVC pipes and things, and you will have your own "cockpit"

I'm going all out on the build for my house when I get home in December, but for now I just need something on the cheap. In December I'll be integrating a cheap racing seat, the new logitech wheel/pedals with 6 speed shifter and clutch pedal and a computer playing Need For Speed Most Wanted at full res (my brother's favorite).

Key word right now is cheap. cheap.
 
Why on earth would you think the PS1 would be the best choice? Have you ever played TOCA 3? Live for Speed? Think 64 person 8 hour endurance races and online tournaments with leagues.
 
I just thought it would be cheap. I can't afford the best right now. PS2 seems to be aaround 60 pounds here in britain used which is about $120 USD.
 
what about getting live for speed for the pc and a nice steering wheel setup around $150 or so?
 
I concur. LFS + a Logitech Driving Force Pro is an awesome combo! You can get the DFP on eBay now for $50-100, cant beat that!

Check out www.racesimcentral.com for all the popular racing games. Theres a few free games out like rFactor which are descent.
