Need advice on wireless extender

HI guys, so I need some help. I moved my router and server setup to a corner in the basement and now I am having trouble getting a decent signal on the first floor.

I currently have FIOS and it is the standard Verizon FIOS wireless router that's sending out the signal. I would like to add something on the first floor that would make the signal stronger.
I am clueless when it comes to repeaters/extenders and how they work. Any advice?
 
If its not a powerline adapter, you'll want to run cable.

I haven't worked with any of the wifi extenders that work worth a crap.
I've tried Trendnet, Western Digital, Netgear.

They all have issues with holding the signal from the router. Constantly needing
reboots once every few days.

Just a lot of headaches.
 
Damn. If I could get FIOS where I am, I wouldn't be running wireless anything. Frack that. At the very least use a power-line adapter to put a dedicated AP on the first floor.
 
the first thing i did when i got fios was to run a cat5 from the moca box to my own personal router. the verizon router SUCKS! The second thing I did was to purchase a few cheap buy great routers like the RT n56U from ASUS and run cat 5 cable from my router to the it to a different floor. Run it in access point mode and blanket your entire house with a good strong stable wifi signal.
 
Okay , I guess what I want is an AP. I have a cat 5 cable that I ran to the first floor already.

Can you guys recommend a good AP. Preferably not too expensive.
Also, how will the AP be able to broadcast the same network name and password? Will that work?

Last question, I just have one cable that I ran terminated with an rj45 on the end. What if I need to plug in another device to it in addition to the AP. Is there some kind of a splitter that I could get? Or perhaps an AP that has a switch built in? If it's not too expensive?

If you need more than one device get a switch. You can get some APs with secondary NICs, but its going to cost you 10x more than just getting a cheap switch. I like the Ubiquiti UniFi APs. you can get them for like $50 on Amazon.

A common wireless router is basically the same as an AP. You just don't use the WAN port. Run your cable from core in the basement to one of the switch ports in the new router/ap (this also leaves 3+ ports open for other devices).

To run multiple wireless devices (multiple AP/router), you simply use the same SSID, but set each device to broadcast on a different channel. Pretty easy.

ASUS makes it pretty easy to switch back and forth between access point mode and router mode, I'd suggest taking a look at one of their products. It will include a built-in switch to expand the wired connection wherever you put it. I run this exact same setup.

Remember, don't use the WAN port on the router upstairs (you can, but it can cause config issues down the line (double nat)).
