Sup guys. I recently switched from a desktop w/ 500gigs to a laptop with 100gigs and a 250gig Iomega nas drive(free!).

So the nas drive is plugged in right next to my Linksys 802.11g Compact router. Its hardwired in. My laptop is 802.11g. But yeah i can connect and all that shit fine to the nas drive. Streaming is fine, i can listen to music and videos(as long as i don't fast forward crazy) without any problems.

The only problem i have with this over wireless is that my big folders, my music directory loads so slow over the wireless. It takes like 1-2 minutes for it to refresh. Now i have like ~50gigs of mp3s in that one directory.

But is their anyway to optimize the folder refresh. Like any way to organize it a better way so that I can load it immediately? Or is it just to big of a folder?

Its fast when plugged in of course.

Thanks,
Dan

probably by making smaller folders

yeah make subfolders with fewer files in them, i.e. a deeper file tree
Or is it just to big of a folder?
not really, but it may well be that the network protocol used is not optimized for low-bandwidth connections.

so i have music setup like this

In the Music directory, i have folders for a bunch of artists, then i also have director for Rap and in Rap i have Artists.

So:

Music
>>Artist
>>Rap
>>>>Rap Artist
>>Reggae
>>>>Reggae Artist

How could i optimize this

I use iTunes to sort my MP3s and its sorted by Artistes followed by their album title.

I'm not too sure how you can optimise it.

what media player do you use to play your MP3s?

I used to be a big fan of Helium 2, which creates a DB with all your music, but also allows you to mass move and rename, so that the directory structure would represent your DB. At the same time I need to warn you that the program is slow as molasses over a network connection, especially when adding tags, since it transfers the whole file when you first make a change.
