Ok long story but here are the relevant details or so I hope.

So about end of Jan time I ordered from newegg a ASUS A7N8DLX or whatever that K7 board is for my athlon xp 200. I also ordered a gig of PC3200 corsair xms (not the XL stuff but still the plaitinum heatspreader matched set etc ...). I install everything and it seems to run fine for a while. Periodically I would see an occasional BSOD and sometimes pc probe would report the vcore drop to the alarm level(s). So after a little while I decide that this is going on long enough I call ASUS and send back my mobo.

Fast forward 3 (almost 4 weeks) and I get my mobo back, install it back in the case, screw down the screws, install the cpu/mem/heatsinks/connectors, etc ... all seems ok. I power it on and all is good, voltage is stable, heat is not an issue, fans are going all seems to be ok then out of the blue "poof" the system just shutsdown. No windows is shutting down, no warning nothing on pcprobe says anything out of the ordinary. I say WTF and hit the power button to start things over again ... no worky ... ugh what the hell. I switch off the PS (oops forgot to mention its an antec true350 and was purchased in jan sometime) in the back, give it a few seconds switch it back on and hit the power button. Things start up no errors, etc ... windows is happy for a few minutes than poof again same problem. I am now sorta pissed cause that means no WOW :(

I double check connections on the mobo and double check windows stuff during the few minutes I have. I then call Antec and ask for a replacement, they xship one to me (with my credit card of course) I install it and same problem. So in all reality odds say I have discluded the mobo/mem/ps. Side note: when I was having the mobo problems I ran memtest86 on the corsair mem for 12hours to see if anything was wrong, no errors.

So in my frustration one of my savvy friends suggests replacing the cpu as that is the only other device he knows that can cause the system to just halt like that. Well its on the way from newegg. I am really hoping this solves it as I don't know what else I can do.

A few notes:

No I don't have another ps to test with (unless you count the "old" one going back to antec today)

No I don't have another cpu to test with until the new one arrives which is an upgrade :)

I do have another mobo which I could use but will have to do a massive reinstall of windows as it doesn't have native sata (I do have a promise card if I need it). I would be pissed if that was the case as this mobo is supposed to be "fixed" by asus.

No I don't have unlimited funds for the "replace everything" suggestion that I will no doubt get.

What GPU you running, it could make all the difference in decideing if your PSU is to blame.
 
seems to me like your stressing the rails on your power supply. 350w isn't a whole lot for modern video cards and such.
 
Check the recommended power supply requirements on your graphics card box to see if that may be the problem. You may need a 400W power supply.

Ok it's a PNY 6800 AGP says on the box a 300 ps is required. So I should be fine, in fact on my old mobo I was until I switched them out. Could the mobo be drawing more juice than the older mobo? Old was a kt400x8 or something from albatron, pretty bare bones mobo and with the gpu was working fine. But a mobo upgrade was in my future so I choose onboard sata and others vs the promise card I was running.

Any thoughts?
 
You have tested everything, to see if its the power supply, unplug everything that you don't need for the computer to start up, like CD-ROM, extra RAM, PCI Cards, etc... If it boots fine its a power issue, if it doesn't its something else.
 
My money is on the mobo. There are several ASUS K7N* boards, and for the most part, they are good boards.

However, I have never had one work in any machine for my house. All the up from the A7V133, I would get wierd errors. Until, I finally gave up on owning anything ASUS in any machine in my house.

How many case fans are you running? You may want to unplug a couple of them, and see if that fixes your problem.

Or, sell it, and buy an MSI board. :)
 
Ok,

Based upon suggestions from here I have tried some stuff last night.

I unplugged both cdroms, removed any pci cards and the only things plugged in were the video card, hard drive, cpu fan, and on1 case fan. It will actually power up but after a few seconds it shuts off. And during those few seconds no video and no hard drive activity.

Any other ideas? I will put in a call to asus today to see what they say.
 
So I tried a bunch a stuff and ended up calling Asus back. I spoke to two techs and the consensus is that the mobo I have from them (which after talking to the rma people is the same one I originally had but they "fixed") is bad and I need to send it back to them.

So crossing my fingers in a few weeks I should have it back.
