My processor DOA or user error?

i noticed some of the dark areas around the processor.... should it look like this

I got it from Newegg. Its Barton 3000 400 FSB. I installed it yesterday and my computer turned on but nothing appeared on the screen. The fans turned on and the hard drive light just stayed on. So I popped my 2200 back it and its working now. I have some different RAM in and its 2 x 512 3200. Just making sure if this normal looking or not. I about to flash my CMOS and see how that goes.

They put some sort of clear coating with dye or something over the chip. I smears onto the board like that. So yes, looks normal.

that kinda looks like someone tried to oc the chip by bridging some of the contacts
and the bridging material contacted the contact in the bottom of the laser cut. I may be wrong.

Here's a pic of my 2500 barton. Note the stains I mentioned above around the processor. Looks like the blue varnish like stuff is hand painted perhaps. At any rate, it's normal.

The blue 'varnish' is normal...but cut down on the thermal paste [H]ardbrother...you're drowning that CPU in goo.

Maybe thats why it wont start up, try a 333FSB

I made a mistake earlier when i was talking about the RAM. It's my roommates and I am sorta borrowing it for now. And its Corsair XMS 2x512 3500 433mhz. Would that have anytihng to do with it? I tried my 2100 512 and did the same thing. It gave the monitor a standby signal or sleep signal or whatever.
