Hi all,

It's been a long time since I posted here, so long I've actually forgot my username and had to create a new one! This was back in the days of the duron 700 and geforce 2's so i'm sure you can forgive my forgetfulness!

I've been getting back into computers recently and decided to do a G5 case mod, something I've been wanting to do for a long time.

I wanted to keep it looking as original as I could, but I had to make some sacrifices in that regard. I had to move the hard drive caddy due to the size of the motherboard and I had to remove the front speaker/fan assembly entirely to allow the hdd caddy to be installed. I also had to cut 2 small holes in the perspex window to allow for the pcie power and hdd cables.

If I had to do it again I would go with an m-atx board so everything can stay in the right place. But it was a good learning experience.

The all-important specs are:

Gigabyte Z77X-D3H
Intel I5 3570k
GTX 670
16gb Corsair Vengeance ram
Sandisk Ultra 120gb ssd
2x 320gb seagate sata hdd.

Ignore the screen, mouse and keyboard in the pic, that's just for testing! I've got it hooked up to a Samsung 24" 1920x1200 screen, apple keyboard and rat7 gaming mouse.

Very clean looking. I have a G5 case sitting here next to me. I rescued it from the work recycling pile after the motherboard and one of the processors fried. I am looking forward to converting it to a PC.

Were there any special challenges involved, besides the motherboard size?
 
With the right tools it's actually a fairly straightforward mod. I used a pre-made front i/o cable, motherboard tray and back plate, which simplifies things a lot.
 
You did a great job!

I've read through a few G5 case mods and the rear panel always seems to create the most headache. But you're right. The right pre-fab'ed motherboard tray would make it much simpler. Looks like you picked the perfect one and integrated it nicely. A lot cleaner than some others I've seen.

I really like that case and would love to mod one. I just have zero need for anything bigger than an ITX box.

No, it's from thelaserhive.com. It's £70 ($112) for the tray and the back plate

Thanks a lot, I tried to keep it clean and original. I'm not a fan of the ones I've seen with lights inside, they detract from the cases original styling.
