Wondering what setting everyone runs their MX518 at, since mine jsut arrived a few hours ago. Been playing mostly Counter Strike, and my accuracy has improved massively over the Click! optical mouse I had been using.

Should I use SetPoint Implementation, or OS implementation? What exactly do these setting effect?
Should I set the game's mouse sensitivity setting for optimum playing at 1600 DPI and sniping at 800 or so DPI (This is what I'm attempting now)?
For web browsing and other OS stuff should I use 1600 DPI, with a low pointer speed, or 400 DPI with a high pointer speed?

I also have some X-raypad mouse skates that are way bigger than the tiny feet on the 518. Should I just put them over the feet and push them down so that they conform over the feet?

EDIT: This is on a Func 1030 mouse pad, if that makes any difference.
 
I've had EXCELLENT results with my MX518 and Icemat, though I can't speak for you.

As for my settings...

No mouse accell, 1600 DPI all the time, medium mouse speed. I only turn down DPI if I need to--IE a game has the mouse going too fast.

i use the setpoint drivers for sure

and i set games to sensitivity for 1600 dpi

then i just leave it at 800 for normal use
 
i keep mine at 800 all the time... just use the OS drivers. i really got it because it matches my keyboard

This kinda stuff makes me sad. The best gaming mouse out there (well, some would argue the G6 or whatever, but I say the MX518 still) and you're not even using it to its full potential. Though I guess it is up to you what you do with your money.

I wouldn't use the OS drivers...they're not that great, and don't have NEARLY as many options.

I got it for $10 new, it beats the crap out of my generic optical mouse in shooters, and the Razor Diamondback is ugly and unergonomic IMO. I don't like the side button placement on the G6... it's more convenient to have them on one side.

And I lied... the matching my keyboard thing is just a perk, and the perfect way to get a rise out of you!

But yeah, I used it at 800 DPI for about 2 hours, put it up to 1600 then never went back. So beautiful, the headshots lining up...
 
man the razor looks so good on the internet/pictures.... went into bestbuy.... saw it connected to a computer... went over,, it's WAY smaller then I thought hehe... and it feels not so well constructed... my lil bro's MX518 feels a lot sturdier hehe.
 
I recently picked up a 518 too, and had the exact same question. Is it better to turn the DPI setting all the way up and adjust sensitivity in Windows/Games, or does it even make a difference? I've read a few different well informed posts on the subject in various forums and the consensus seems to be that it really doesn't matter. Whether set to 800 or 1600 dpi the 518 still works with 100% accuracy because of the nature of it's sensor, and the way/speed in which it polls data.

That being said I leave mine set at 1600 and adjust the speed though in-game settings.

I wouldn't install the drivers. They sometimes lag and the mouse doesn't feel as responsive as without driver. I would use 1600DPI in game, but lower your sens until it you become comfortable. Since 1600 DPI is 2x the DPI of 800, a 2 sens in CS on 800DPI would be a 1 on 1600DPI.
 
This mouse is being shipped to me right now.
Does anyone know if there would be a problem using this with PS/2?
I'm using it with a KVM switch for when I work, but when I'm not I'm plugging it straight into the USB port.

But without installing the Logitech CD stuff, you can't change the resolution, can you? Also, what about the mouse skates (see first post)?

ds- the mouse comes with a USB to PS/2 adapter, to I would assume PS/2 will work fine. Good Luck.
 
Can't you change the DPI with the easy DPI switching buttons on the mouse without having to install the software/drivers?
 
I'm not sure you can, because the software has a utility for configuring how many different resolutions you can choose from and what they are.
 
You can use the buttons to change the DPI without the drivers (1600/800/400). You just can't use a custom DPI (Like 1200). Use USB over PS/2 also, it's faster and you will have better response.

Mine is set as follows:

1600dpi at all times, pointer speed a notch below 50% (for windows), no acceleration, sensitivity adjusted in game.

I had teflon feet on mine, but they were actually slower than the ones already on the M518 so in my personal experience, I wouldn't.
 
I'm mainly using them to protect my mouse feet from wear :). Here is the picture showing the size difference. Will putting them over the mouse feet, and conforming them to the bottom cause any problems?

No offense, but this is a damn lie. The drivers have never EVER lagged at any point in time that me or my two friends can tell. Please, don't spread BS like this.

The drivers are awesome and allow for the reprogramming of keys (useful for programs like Ventrilo and Teamspeak).

Also, I've heard the tripe about 1600DPI being no different than 800DPI on this thing, and I tell you that's a lie too. At least as far as I can tell.

Finally, if you're going to use any skates, use ones from www.cshyde.com or none at all.
 
Well, I turned it over to start putting the teflon on, and under close examination I noticed a crack in the bottom, yelled several expletives, and proceeded to call NewEgg. Waiting on an RMA now.... I hate waiting.

For me, on PS/2, the drivers would lag, on USB it would be fine. If found though, without the drivers, the mouse would be more repsonsive. And for keys like Vent and TS, I could bind them through the program, so that didn't affect me. I'm not sending BS, but my personal experience, if you think that's BS, don't bash me for saying it and that it's all wrong. Instead, state your experience in a better manor instead of a knock-off on mine. I have no intentions of trying to BS someone when I'm trying to help.

Placebo effects are cool. No, really.

Anyways, Oline, I've had a crack on every Logitech mouse I've had. It's just a hairline one in the solid plastic--it'll never come to anything. My MX1000 went a year without doing anything funky, and my MX518 has survived since August. Trust me, it's not a big deal ;)
