MX440 or 9200SE?

Well I've got a MX440 and a 9200SE here. I'm sure they would be fairly similar in performance but which do you think would have the edge in a HTPC for sage on SDTV?
 
whichever one has the best s-video output. if your just doing SDTV thats the most important thing, not how fast the card is.
 
My wife has an LE. nice though. power windows, locks, cruise. wait wrong forum...
 
I've been using an SE for the past week, quality does lack a bit. Hopefully the MX440 will improve it
 
Seems like none of you guys have a clue about what you're talking about.

The 440MX has inferior RAMDACS and S-Video output compared to any ATI card, no matter how cheap.

Althoug the performance of the two cards is equally bad, the MX 440 lacks programmable pixel and vertex shaders. That rules out several games, nowadays.(For ex. Prince of Persia.)
 
Well HilRam, b4 u go around talking like that for starters... I said I'm only interested in SageTV output to television performance. If you have any helpfull information, please share
 
Well, the ATI has the best quality on the S-Video out connector, if your card has that one. (Some 9200s are shipped with phono composite video out.) The only advantage the Nvidia card has in this respect, is better driver support for PAL, the European TV system. On ATI cards, no matter how much you fiddle around with the driver, it comes out as Black and White, until you add a ColorFix adapter (costs about ten bucks). However, if you are living in the States, your system is NTSC and this will work without a glitch. :)
 
I'm pretty sure it's been proven 9200se has terrible tv-out and mx440 would easily be superior
 
Well, at least you are the proud owner of both these cards, so you have the opportunity to try it out for yourself.

Yeah Overlay is what you're going to be limited too.
 
Umm, anyways... yea thanks for the replies. Once i get the case finished in my sig and have the HTPC all back together, I'll see which is best. I have a strong feeling its gonna be the MX440... unfortunatly I "borrowed" this card from my neighbor so I'm hoping he doesn't ask for it back :D
 
I'd see if you could get a secondhand FX5200. They offer excellent TV out, better drivers for this purpose, come in passive packages (and active if you want it), and have DX9 support.

If you can't do that, I'd go MX440 for similar reasons.

I have first hand experience with these modern ish cards:
FX5200
MX440
GF3
GF2 Pro
9800 pro
9600xt
9700 pro
9500 pro
9500 np
8500

Of those, my favorites for TV out are the FX5200, the MX440, and the GF2 pro in that order. Most GF2 cards have shitty TV outs because the manufs are cheap, but I got lucky with leadtek and had great output. The radeon series has equally decent output, but the nvidia cards are slightly crisper and their drivers are better. If you ever go linux, there's no question that the nvidia cards are better - ati linux drivers suck ass to an incredible degree.

Also, to "prove" my objectiveness, I run an 9800 pro in my main rig as it has the nicest picture quality in standard operation of any card I'm thrifty enough to own.
 
That really makes me mad, I only got this MX440 cuz it came out of someone's rig I know... because he bought a FX5200 off my other friend for 30$. Had i knew my other friend was sellin his FX5200 for that little I would have snatched it up :rolleyes:
 
I've used a nVidia 5200 and ATI 9100. The TV out on the 5200 was a little better. Gaming performance was about equal.
 
the s-video output on nVidia cards is better than ATI's offerings (tried many a different card in my quest for the best possible picture).

For use on SDTV I would have thought using an ATI card would be better, allowing you to use a d-sub to scart cable giving RGB output.

This is the method i've settled with as the quality is much much better than s-video (difference in quality is like VHS to DVD).

Or is there some reason you cant do this?

What does dsub to scart mean? I can do s-video or composite out, its not like the sdtv has component cables.
 
The D sub connector is your 15 pin VGA connector on your graphics card and the SCART socket is a 21 pin rectangular connector on the back of the TV that is used for RGB input.

I presume that TV sets over the pond have SCART sockets but I could be very wrong (which could explain why noone has mentioned it before).

If you dont recognise the connector then it could be that its used in Europe only. If thats the case then sorry for getting your hopes up as it is massively better than s-video

Ahh, S-Video it is then. My question is... if video game systems look so good on composite... how is s-video much better?
 
Console are made to look good at such a small res much like a frontend, a PC isn't.
