in my msconfig startup tab there are 2 items listed but they do not have a name so I'm not sure what program it refers to and if it is safe to remove it from my startup list...how can I expand the "location" portion of the screen so I can view the location of the program?...

drag the bottom bar to the far right, and a divider will show on the right of the "location" column. You will have to drag the divider to the right in small increments untill you reach the end of the listing.

ahhh...cool...that did the trick...

now do I need those 2 "HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run" listings in my Startup or can I safely remove them?

Wait for others to post, but I'm going with it's okay to remove them. They aren't listing a file name, so it's probably just a situation where the registry was garbled a bit by some uninstall process.

this is actually from a brand new install...I reformatted my system with XP Pro last night...

Okay then, something you installed made some registry keys in the Run section, but never populated it with actual filenames. Either way, I still think they are safe to remove.

Disable them in msconfig, reboot make sure everything is working properly, if so, put msconfig back in normal start mode, reboot, and remove them from the registry.

you can disable EVERYTHING ins MSCONFIG and it wont affect windows.

it will only affect 3rd party intalled items.

i always disable everything except antivirus or spyware apps.

Though it's unrelated: I see what looks to be QuickTime? Check out QuickTime Alternative. I like it a lot better because there is not bloat. The same people also make Real Alternative.

Agreed.
But I'd be inclined to remove them just for the fact there is no names, just because I'm paranoid.

They are safe to remove. I had similar entries also. Not usre what caused them but I removed them and all is well.

I would def. uncheck them, and you may want to go check out the Run folder in the registry that they're pointing to. Viruses and malware dump a lot of crap in there. I'm not saying you definitely have an infection, but it never hurts to take 15 seconds to look.
