i have a weird issue in my ladies linux/windows system where the DvdRom won't mount and it will not read anything in the optical drive. I have found a command to use in the terminal, but have not gotten success yet.
mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom
is what i found as an example, but it keeps telling me: can't find /mnt/sr0 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
or if I type it a bit different: only root can do that
my question is, anyone familiar with Linux Ubuntu know the command to mount the DvdRom? i think it is called /dev/sr0.
i have no knowledge of how to work linux, just have luck with entering commands.
also, it is having an issue recognizing the sound card, it worked for a while, but today, things went bad( i did disable the on board audio!)
thanks for your time and happy holidays....

Most Linux distros handle automounting well and you should not have to mount the drive yourself. The command you issued should work and be accessible if you have root access to the drive. A good way to test if the drive works is to try and boot from a live cd.

Does the drive work in Windows? If it doesn't work in either OS, then the drive is probably bad.

Are you doing it as root?
Make sure there's a dir called /mnt/cdrom
in your fstab config file, there should be a line like this:
/dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,ro,users 0 0

Also, make sure that your linux distro is seeing your drive by typing:
cat /var/log/dmesg | grep sr0

Hopefully that helps ya out.

ok, thanks for the info! you guys always come through for me.
First, the drive DOES work in windows, and "SOMETIMES" works in Linux, thats the wierd thing.
Next after I entered the first command this popped up: sh: /dev/sr0: Permission denied
after entering second command, this popped up:
[ 1.093158] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 40x/40x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
[ 1.093306] sr 0:0:1:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
. I have read that the drive should automount, but that does not appear to be happenning, in fact just today, on boot up, just after choosing which OS i want to use I get an Ubuntu screen telling me the CdRom failed to mount< press S to skip, or M to mount manually. i have administrator privileges, so I am able to make changes. thanks again for your time.....
