Most Impressive Speed Run?

What are the most impressive speed runs yall have witnessed?

I'd have to go with:
Morrowind in 7 minutes. (Anybody who has played the game knows that it takes the average player weeks upon weeks to complete.)

Battletoads 2 in 24 minutes. [Possibly the most difficult game ever created. Beating it alone is a feat that very, very, very few people can say they accomplished. Watch this video and see how the game hovers on the brink of impossibility. Very impressive video, and fun to watch.]

The most impressive would have to be that Mario 3 video which was floating around for a while. Not legit though... undoubtedly done on an emulator at 2fps, with extensive saving and loading... But it's still incredible to watch. Quake Done Quick is pretty impressive as well.

I played it fanatically for two years before I got around to finishing the main quest... :D

I found that speed run a bit hard to follow though - more than once I was left thinking "What the hell did he just do?". Maybe it'd be a little clearer in the hi-res version...

Battletoads, my fucking god, how hard was that. I remember playing that when I was 8 thinking, wow this is fun, and never getting past the 3rd level. Now looking at that speed run I really understand how unbelievably impossible that game was. To this day, I do not think myself capable of completing the task.

Metroid Prime done in about an hour was pretty impressive, some of the tricks used are rather clever. They can be seen on samus.co.uk, the 2d ones are good too.

The Silent Hill one was quite good on speeddemoarchives, about 1 hour 30 minutes. The guy was basically running without the light on the whole game, never even picked up the crowbar. It's pretty amazing how he runs around and avoiding all enemies, never even killing one except for the bosses. I prefer runs that don't use blatant exploits that cheat the game mechanics, like the Metroid run I saw and the Mario 64 one.

Also saw the Chrono Trigger in 4 hours 20 min, though I suspect it might have been helped with save states.

Battletoads, (sigh) I beat it.

took a while but it was damn satisfying. (I wish games were like this today)

How about those Quake 3 Defrag runs that took literally 7 seconds to finish? ;)

The people who do those speed runs have no life. I wonder how many freakin tries it takes them to do those things. Ridiculous

everyone has there own hobby. i bet you have one that alot of people think is a waste of life too.

Thanks Mom ;)

He's right though.

For instance, you sit on a messageboard and make fun of complete strangers because of what they do with their free time. Some people, perhaps, might call that a "waste of time" and consider someone who does it to have "No life".

I do it myself, so I wouldn't say that, but some would :).

ON topic however, the Mario 3 one was pretty impressive, and I always enjoyed watching the speed-games. Especially ones that I've played myself and remember.

Probably the 2 Super Mario 64 videos, one in 20 minutes, and another in 16 minutes.
The Battletoads one is just inhuman, though. That game took me months to finally beat when I was a kid. Think I was about 8 or 9 at the time, and I remember giving up homework, meals and a friendship or two just to finish it.

anything assisted in any way just isn't as impressive to me. i could never do most of that stuff, but i wish speed runs were done with no assistance, just like we play the games, so we can have something to judge by.

Battletoads... wow that guy is good. I remember I was either 5 or 6 and my friend and I just gave up lol. Maybe when the Revolution comes out I'll DL it and play it again.( or use "other" methods :D )

That...was...amazing.
Just know that the 16 minute one is tool assisted, so its going to be perfect in any way. But still, really, really awesome.

Yea, except for the glitches and obvious, yet clever, video editing.

No video editing, its tool assisted, meaning they use save states and rerecords. Read the FAQ here:

Personally my new favorite speed run is the race through SMB:

I actually tried a Battletoads speed run last night on an emulator. I was pretty much tied with the guy in speed until the elevator stage (didn't have the timing right on those jumps and still rusty), and this is while I haven't played the game in over 8 years. It's not that hard, Battletoads was all about knowing the terrain and patterns since a lot of times reflexes simply won't work on it's own. Thing is in those days I was more occupied with getting as many points as possible and how soon I could max my score (max at 999,999) rather then doing speed runs. His Battletoads run is far from perfect, and I think I can beat it after a little practice:p. Will post it on google video once I do.

It's funny how after all these years, I could still picture exactly the run and what you needed to do, I would get about 15-20 1-ups in the 2nd stage bouncing those ravens around on the walls. But it was one of those 'perfect' games that tested all the skills a gamer needs - if you manage to beat the game you are set skillwise for almost any other game.

While it's rather long, I can finish FFVII in about 14.25 hours :D The first time I played for time I got 20 hours; it's harder than it sounds.

My favorite is probably the speed run of beating Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in 7 minutes with Richter.

2nd fave may be beating Final Fantasy 3 (SNES) in 3 something hours.

if anyones played marble blast on the 360 should know some of the crazy speed runs these guys have done.. some maps that take normal people a minute or 2 takes them mere seconds.. here's some examples

There's an awesome little platformer called N. Although simplistic, it's incredibly fun and addictive (and it comes with 500 levels, so it should keep you going for a while...). If you've never played it, I suggest you do so (it's freeware btw).

The relevance? From within the game, you can load the world high-score tables and view the replay of any high-score run. Some of the stuff these guys pull off is just incredible...

That one is awsome, especially the end

I agree. It's inspiring to see something like that. The crowd yelling. The tense speed of the race. It's awesome.

Thanks for the heads up - I'll download it. :)
