Okay, so I took my system apart to do some work on the cooling inside my case. After it all got put back together... no post.

Asus A7V8X
Athlon 2200+ (T-bred-A)
512MB Samsung DDR333
MSI GF4 Ti4200 (128MB RAM)
SB Audigy
1 Maxtor HD (ATA133)
2 optical drives.

Any ideas why it might not be posting at all? I mean, the screen doesn't even load at all. It powers up for a second or so and then shuts right off. Asus Post reporter doesn't give any info on it. Tried the RAM, graphics card, and processor in my old Asus A7V333 and got the same stuff. Is the CPU toast somehow? I know it's not the PSU because I also tried a different one with minimal parts and it made no difference. Any ideas?

This is just a shot in the dark.. but i bonked a CPU once when i was working on the cooling.. what happened was that i tried removing the HSF, but to do so, you have to press down on the board a bit to unhinge the HSF... This is an Abit KR7-133R board, with a 1900+ palomino at the time.

ANyway.. i pressed down on it, to remove the HSF, and the thermal sensor ripped off one of those little box thingieson the bottom of the CPU.. lol i don't know what it's called.... anyway dead CPU after that... it took me a while to realize that the thingy was ripped off... maybe it was a transistor? i dont' know... it was rectangular, on the bottom side of the 1900+ palomino..

I'm just saying maybe you should take a good look at the actually CPU.

My test with the second mobo doesn't mean a HUGE amount, I should say, since I swapped it out previously after I was having a ot of problems with it and couldn't run anything other than WinMe (There is no punishment worse than that. Even Linux refused to work with it.) It should at least POST though. Always could. If I take the CPU out of the mobo and turn it on, in both mobos, they stay on. COuld that mean it's the CPU?

I'm going to be shooting at the basis here, but have you successfully grounded yourself while working on the computer? Sounds like you ESD'd into the motherboard and messed something up royally... here comes typical troubleshooting, try a new processor, memory, take out a stick, etc... see what happens.

I can try just about anything with the exception of a diferent processor. Both my roommates rock P4's. But, I'll be swapping hardware around all night. Will keep things updated.

Looks like it took completely frying my CPU to get the mobo to finally spit something out with the post reporter. "System failed CPU test." Looks like I know what I have to buy now. ;-)
