Well I'm helping build a media PC for friend. No DVD watching but music and photo and web surfing. He wants noise to be kept to an absolute minimum so I suggested a mobile A64 (understanding that they run on S754 mobos) to keep heat/fan noise low.
Is this a resonable option or should he just go with a Winnie and hope the CnQ does the rest of the job for him?
no mobo purchases yet, but it is imminent and looking for a little guidance here.

Your're better off heading into our cpu forums as there are many different types of "mobile 64". A few of them don't even deserve to be called "mobiles" imho because they offer absolutely no thermal advantages whatsoever. You might get lucky and get informed opinions here but you'll get plenty of good responses in the amd cpu forum. Make sure to specifically state your cpu-intentions and keep bumping your thread if necessary ;)

I have interest in the same topic btw, and wish ya luck on your search :)

So I read this and for me the part that stands out the most is the music part, if I were to build something that was mostly for music it would so that I could get bitperfect output for the best possible quality (yeah I'm kind of serious about audio). Would your friend fall into that category too?

If so then I would use a Mobile AXP downclocked to about 1Ghz (probably something like 1.2Ghz or so) with a good heatsink (most likely a passive one) but the main problem with this is the cost, it would pretty much the same as an S939 setup. I would look around the FS/FT area here for parts myself and try to use some that you have laying around.

BTW the reason why I wouldn't go with a Mobile A64 is that they offer very little advantage over the regular A64 chips and some mobos won't work with them.
