MARATHON (Bungie)

This looks VERY different to the Marathon I played...
You're right, it's now a MP only PvP extraction shooter, like Tarkov or The Division's Dark Zone. There's a ton of those coming out.

A few from google:
  • Escape from Tarkov
  • Hyenas
  • Dark and Darker
  • Hunt: Showdown
  • ARC Raiders
  • Marathon
  • MWII DMZ
  • Marauders
  • Starsiege: Deadzone
  • HAWKED
  • The Cycle: Frontier
  • The Division Heartland
Even experienced devs like Bungie will have a real tough time outside launch hype, as imo extraction shooters (without SP/campaign) is a fairly niche market.

Wow! Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long long time.

Used to play Marathon on the Macs we had in high school class.
The only computer I ever purchased, other than laptops, was a Power Mac clone (Umax) with the Motorola 604e chip. It was like 2 grand all in with a Sony Trinitron CRT and extras. My buddy and I would play Marathon using Apple Talk and directly connection our Macs wth what I think was like a serial or printer cable? Anyway I’ve built every PC since but man that was such a fun game.

This one looks like something I won’t be interested in sadly.

Nice, yep fond memories of the original too.

I agree, had they not mentioned what the game was I would have had no idea what I was seeing.

Welp, that kills any interest I had in this game.

Throwing a bunch of these PVP GAAS games at the wall and seeing what sticks? Forget it. No thanks. PVP only? No thanks.
Have to remember that this is the type of thing Sony acquired Bungie for.

Well I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't kinda funky Destiny

That was underwhelming

personally, I'm not intrigued.

I really enjoyed Marathon 2 back in the day, and this does not look a damn thing like it. It's like they wanted to create a whole new game but wanted SOME kind of recognisable IP to get sales.

A new PC Gamer article to add to the meme....

Any time I see a game, and one of the big things is who the developer is, or who they used to work for, etc etc....

I know its going to suck. If you cant come up with something other than using clout of a big name, the product is already suffering before being finalized.

IMO if simply flashing thier company logo isn't enough and they need to list specific games it means the company is washed.

But I sort of get it. They put "from the creators of Halo and Destiny". Halo and Destiny were new IPs that were great when they were new. So it's kind of saying "hey, we're good at making new IPs". Marathon is going to be a new successful IP like those games. Even though Marathon isn't technically a new IP.
It's just that Halo was created almost 25 years ago and Destiny over a decade ago. The only thing they've worked on since then is Destiny 2 and no one really cares about it anymore.

Well Bungie ran Destiny 2 into the ground.

Well Bungie has shown that they have no real creativity these days but are completely up their own butts and unaware of it.

The thing that really showed that to me was Destiny, and the process leading up to it. MS owned Bungie for a long time and is apparently both a good and bad company to work for. Good in that they are good about funding your projects fully, seeing them to completion, and providing QA support. Bad in that they only ever want to fund sequels, they want you to keep making the same game over and over.

So Bungie said that this didn't work for them anymore, they were tired of being the Halo-only studio. They had a vision for a new game, and MS didn't want to make it. So they asked MS to let them go. Implied in that was, if MS didn't a ton of them would quit. Well to MS's credit they did let the studio go, they got to keep their people, structure, name, all that. The Halo IP stuck with MS of course, but Bungie got to stay together and move on and go independent.

They then set off and work on their vision, the thing Microsoft wouldn't let them make... and they make a future sci-fi shooter where you have to fight off evil aliens and so on. Something that 100% could have been a Halo game. Oh and they cozied up to Activision, one of the worst publishers out there.

If this game had a singleplayer, story-based element, I'd be quite interested.

What is this art style called? Looks like the "flat modern GUI" for an entire game. In other words, ugly
It looks like the kind of art you use as barebones placeholder stuff...yet it is actually the final style in this case :ROFLMAO:.
Whatever it's called, it's looking like the company that Bungie hired to produce art and visual design for the game chose to copy and use assets created by someone else without asking permission or even giving her credit. Apparently there are multiple instances of designs that she created appearing in the game. Bungie is claiming that they weren't aware of the situation and will make sure that the original artist is compensated, but this isn't a good look - particularly since several employees at Bungie (including the art director for Marathon) were followers on social media of the account belonging to the creator whose work was stolen. Someone at Bungie had to have known where some of these assets came from since they had likely seen them before, being avid enough fans of it to follow the account of the artist in the first place.

Looks like the whole game was designed around her style.

At a game dev company I worked about 15 years ago one of the new artists we hired was finding artwork online, changing it slightly, and putting it in our game. His justification was you just need to change something 15% and it's ok to use. He was fired after people found out that was going on and we replaced all the artwork he did.

Sounds like there are/were a bunch of people with this philosophy at bungie. If you accept something like this made up 15% rule you get people pushing it even farther until you get people flat out copy pasting.
