Magic the Gather : Tactics

So, it looks like a HoMM style game with Magic rules? That could be pretty good.

Yeah.... and with talent trees. Lets hope its good. I love tactical games. Funny because I was just talking with my friend the other day saying that I wish there were more tactical games out like FFT.

Since the game is free. I wonder what the prices on new cards will be? ...

I played this a E3 and it was fucking awesome. No joke of all the games, all the platforms and all the genres ... this was a gem of show.

There were a few Magic The Gathering games already, no? What is special about this?

I remember playing Magic on the original Xbox, like 7 years ago. It wasn't that special, and it was (IIRC) also similar to HoMM.

This is a tactical game set in the universe. The game play is like Heroes of Might and Magic series, Ogre Battle and Final Fantasy tactics just to name a few. One of the special features I noticed is the addition of talent trees, those can be seen in many RPG's like Diablo and World of Warcraft for example. It should hopefully add an even deeper RPG experience to the game. Not only will you be able to individualize your deck but you will be able to customize your skill tree to your liking as well.

If your a fan of both subjects; magic the gathering and tactical games this is a dream come true.

Magic anything is good news for me. Used to play heavy until Urza sagas.

I wish there was an updated version of Duels of the Planeswalkers though, I spent hours putting together a killer deck with that game.

So is this like MtG Online or is this game truly free? I saw there was a cost affiliated with drafting.

Magic: The Gathering - Tactics is free to download and play. Players will enhance their gameplay by purchasing digital booster packs that contain a mix of figures and spells that they can add to their spellbooks. Players will also be able to purchase additional campaign scenarios for more single-player fun.

Baaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

If the booster decks were really cheap (like $1), then I guess it could be a lot of fun, without shelling too much money into the game. But my guess is that they will cost a few times more than that, so in the end you would end up pouring a lot of money into it.

Yeah it all depends on how much the booster packs cost. I could deal with them costing 5 dollars.

Also this wouldnt be a game I would play normally if I did play it. I like the real card game much more, but this would be fun playing with a friend at a lan party or something.

Well the boosters in the MTGO are the same as retail and even include tax. I was excited to hear about this game as well until I found out it is still all about buying boosters.

i havnt played the card game in like 10 years.. and its not something id pay for to play on my pc but since this is free i will be checking it out for sure. plus i miss turn based tactical games use to play them all the time.

This goes live on Jan 18, anyone know how much the booster packs cost and if you're allowed to trade with other players?

From checking around it seems like it'll be $3.99 per booster, $84.99 per box.

I wonder if Games Workshop is or ever considered doing something like this for its Warhammer/40k series.

Played it at Comic Con, was a lot of fun when I was playing it. I'll definitely take a closer look when it's released.

Edit: Just learned SOE has their hands on it. I am not going to touch it now. I am not going to give that company another cent after what they did with SWG.

On the positive note, if the game gains any popularity, it would mean that you could sell your own account once you'd be bored with it, and thus be able to recover most of the money lost.

Probably against the terms of service, but people do it all the time with mmo's...

I'm guessing they don't have a two player cooperative though - if thats true it will be awesome.

There are so few games with them =/ And it's a huge selling point

I honestly can't see this game as fun. Planeswalkers was barely fun, as a time killer. I would pay full price for a mtg game that you could play online vs and coop, with all the current seasons cards and the ability to build your own deck.
Hell, I'ld love it more if they had their base platform for $15 and you BOUGHT your physical card booster packs, and they would have a code redeem that specific card.

But paying $4 for an online booster pack, which I do not get any physical cards for, would be a no-go for me.

Exactly.

$4 for a virtual good such as this is way, way too much.

They're really skimpy on the details, even their forum admin admits that. But it seems like you could spend around $15 a month and have a comparable experience to other online games with a monthly fee. Plus if you enter in real life local magic tournaments, you'll spend around $15 as well (probably more). Also they have days where you double cash weekends, where boosters are $2 a pack, and a booster box is $43.50.

It doesn't seem like that good of a game to me though. They'll only have 150 cards at first, and then there's special promo cards that you can only get by purchasing them (you might be able to win them in tournaments). Then they force you to pay cash to respec, to use the auction house, and to play new campaigns.

It's free to play though, so I might give it a shot, then uninstall if it sucks, or if I need to invest a lot of cash to do well it it.

I was tempted to try this till I heard it will be buying boosters. Will have to wait and see. I already play the paper Magic card game so paying double for digital cards like on magic online I really don't want to do. I did enjoy the old micropose game and duels of the plainswalkers.

Was SUPER hyped until i saw it was ran by greedy ass SOE. You can just about guarantee this will be designed to find every single possible way to part you with your cash and if you dont you are boned.

I wouldnt be surprised if they charged more for virtual boosters than real ones...

I will try and am going to keep an open mind but i hold no hope for this.

They flew them to the event, payed for rooming and food and on top of that loaded them down with swag. Of course most people there will be giving glowing reviews.

Going to have to wait for some real unbiased reviews.

I actually heard they are charging 4 dollars per booster pack that contains 10 cards.

There's only 180 cards at release, so 10 cards may work out the same as 14 for MTGO. Might be cheaper to just trade/buy individual cards you need.

Are magic cards really worth anything now? I still have a ton of them but most are very used since we actually played the game...srs....srsly. (Sometimes we would be at each others throats, we as in my friends.)

Okay, maybe I'm not understanding the business model correctly but this seems kind of expensive.

The "talent tree" looks like, what, ~100 points? Maybe more if you fill out all the colors. I played through the free missions and you get 1 point total after 5 missions. Then they want you to pay 5$ for the next set of missions. Beyond that, you have to pay for cards too. From what I can tell, you don't get any talent points for PvP.

When I went tot he website it wanted my web browser to install something, is this a web based game or what?

- Wow that buisness model seems excessive, I Think ill stay away for now.
