.mac worth it?

I just bought my Mac about 5 months ago and got the .Mac to try out. In the end I never use any of it. 1gig of disk space isn't enough to backup much so I have an external firewire drive I use instead. I don't use the webspace as I run my own web server. Who needs one more email account, especially when you have google/yahoo out there if you're looking for a free one.

End of the day, I won't be renewing it when my year runs out.
 
I use it every day and could not imagine having a mac without it. I have two mac's and it make syncing settings, backing up all of my personal settings and Keychain passwords, etc. a breeze! I use .mac for my main e-mail and I can easily check it from anywhere that I have computer access, regardless of if I'm on my PowerBook or iMac. Also, I can access my bookmarks easily. It's webpage building service is worth the price alone!

Not to mention the free software they give users. Also, the user tutorials cover everything you could want to do with your mac, including all Apple software apps.

In regards to the 1 gig storage not being enough, you can increase that storage for a small premium. .Mac is not intended to be a massive storage space since most people have painfully slow upload speeds so uploading gigs upon gigs would be impractical. However, it is extremely useful as a storage space for pictures, smaller movie clips or anime series, music, etc. I've used it for all of these purposes. I mainly use it to store important backups for my macs.
 
I've been using it for a while now, and obviously like it. The single biggest thing I use it for is e-mail, it works flawlessly with my powerbook, treo and I can get to it online anytime. Beyond that I use to back up smaller important things (documents and contacts mostly, worth noting that I back up to an external drive and neworked windows machine too...triple threat!) and host pictures and other media to share with people. It also integrates VERY nicely with ilife and the rest of the OS, which is a bonus if you want to host a website from ilife, do a photocast with iphoto, or host your own podcast.

I guess it all kind of depends whether you want a nice, tidy all in one solution to web space and e-mail, or whether you have the time and technical savy to setup webservers and what not. For me, technical knowledge isn't really a problem, it's just easier to have ,mac and leave it at that.
 
I have .Mac since a few weeks. I like it because of this:

- 1GB webspace (my internet provider allows 50MB :rolleyes: )
- Email with a large inbox (my internet provider allows 50MB for email)
- Backup application = sweet (quick and easy but still powerfull :cool: )
- Integration with iLife (iWeb, though it is a little slow on my iBook ;) )
- Sync multiple Macs (I will buy the intel powerbox and want to keep my iBook)

I really like iWeb for it's easy to create a website QUICKLY and with lots of automatic layout elements. On the negative side, iWeb likes RAM and it's slow. It needs some more tuning but for a 1.0 release it's fantastic.

It basically came down to this: Walk into ANY store. Go to ANY electronics section. Now, do you PC items, or Apple items? Question answered!

I am not a mac person, and thusly have never used .mac...but I have had it explained to me many times by Mac reps...

I think its worth it (isnt it like $99 per year?) IF you are really going to use all teh features. If all you want is email, go with GMail...if you can and will take advantage of all it offers, I say its totally worth it.
 
If .Mac was 25 bucks a year I'd think it was great.

I don't need no freakin' online storage or POP email addresses! I already run six domains, for cryin' out loud!

All I want it for is the synching and that ain't worth 100 bucks a year...
 
i really wish there was an option to force a reply when people want to vote in a poll. this many respondents uggh

now i gotta write down each user that responded double check them against this thread and then read the profiles of each guy that didnt to weed out the pc guys uggh

i wonder if theres an applescript i can write to help me lol

What does this have to do with this thread? Last I check the Apple store sells Apple products :p
 
well they do offer a free trial of .mac for 60 days so why not try it?

The only thing I would find useful is the idisk but I carry my 1 gig usb memory with me
 
I use .Mac... It makes publishing pictures and websites so much easier. The syncing is a nice touch, too.
