i'm getting a powerbook and moving into a house where i will also have a pc. I have to setup a wireless network anyway, so how would i go about configuring it so that i can use both on the same network?
 
if i went with an airport express, would i have to buy a wireless card for my pc. right now in my house it's just plugged into the back of my linksys router.
 
Well with OS X Mac's coexist rather peacefully. Sharing is quick and easy. Some little things to learn is that on Windows hosts samba shares do not delete the ._ files as those store the metadata for OS X. If you want to move the file when on the Windows computer move the file and the ._filename file with it.

As for the airport express. My father-in-law has one and I'm not impressed by its range and signal strength. Keep in mind that you do NOT have to get an Apple Airport to use wireless on the PowerBook. Any 802.11b/g device will work just fine. The opposite is also true, any 802.11b/g device will work just fine with an Airport (same things just different names).

If you already have the Airport I would keep the Linksys router (I assume it is not wireless), setup the Airport in bridge mode and plug it into the router, then have the desktop plug directly into the Linksys.

If you don't, just get a WRT-54g. It would replace the router and act as your wireless device (and has 4 10/100 ports). Only having the one device vs two gives gives you an extra plug on your powerstrip, less cable clutter, and much simpler troubleshooting.
 
ok lets say i have nothing. what should i go with? linksys wireless? the notebook says it has built in airport extreme...will that work or do i have ot get another wireless card of some sort
 
Airport Extreme is 802.11g vs the regular Airport 802.11b.

Well I personally just don't like the look of the Apple Airport, but it functions well enough. My preference would be the Linksys WRT54G. It is 802.11g, the Powerbook will work great with it. The desktop will work great plugged into the 4-port switch, or if you want the desktop to be wireless just get a PCI wireless card (preferably 802.11g).

If you know for a fact that all devices you want to plug in are going to be wireless then the Airport will be fine, but you can get the Linksys for less money. If you might want to have a couple wired computers (or plug the laptop in to get some faster transfer speed) then get the Linksys or something with 4 or more 10/100 ports built in.

I guess my recommendation is the WRT54.
