Mac OS on Home-Built PCs?

Does Apple's announcement that they'll be switching to Intel processors mean that I'll be able to load Mac OS on my home-built system (native)? Even if I'm running an AMD chip?

Apple has, for some time, had a version of their OSX that runs on x86 hardware. They've done this in case they've needed to switch to Intel processors in a hurry in case IBM faltered. I would be surprised if they DID NOT make it available to consumers later on, unless they decide to lock down the requirements so you still had to buy hardware strictly from them.

I've heard that that is exactly what apple is going to do, but I've also heard that within seconds of these dev kits being sent out that the mad 1337 h4x0rz would have a pirated version for us.

In no way will apple have an OS X for the mass PC market. Apple not only sells software, they also sell hardware. Also OS X only works with a very small base of hardware and adding support for all that PC hardware would be a major undertaking, they have enough to do with OS X working with the new Apple hardware and stay working with the old Apple hardware...

Not really x86 hardware, but just Intel cpus OSX has worked with Intel cpus from day one.

Doubt they will be able to make it work without apple hardware, thay would have a better chance in making there own Linux base look-a-like.

Just because Apple is using Intel cpus does not mean that all of the hardware in an Apple system is just like a PC.

No, they've demoed versions to a private, select few that runs completely on x86 hardware. This version has worked with Intel CPUs, but the version that's publicly availabel does not, nor did it ever. That's a completely different architecture.

I imagine it's gonna be like the SGI 320 and 540 Visual workstations, they both ran intel x86 Xeon Chips, but that was it. SGI Hardware the rest of the way, and had a custom hal in windows 2000 to boot.

Note this is just my opinion, I could be completely wrong. ;)

Well if it's all so proprietary then how can they run Windows on it? I thought I heard Jobs acknowledge that that's something that some users will probably end up doing, while he shot down any dreams of OSX coming to generic x86 computers.

That quote makes me think that the hardware is pretty much the same, but there will be some kind of DRM or ancillary hardware requirement or BIOS requirement for OSX to run on a machine. Else how would Windows be albe to run on one? Unless we'd have to buy Windos XP Mac Makeover Edition.

The SGI's ran windows. ;) If they went the route SGI did, then someone just has to write a custom hal, and windows would work. ;)
