Looking For Hardware Raid Controller

I'm looking for a hardware raid controller card for my mobo. What I am working towards on this machine is installing either Hyper-V server or ESXi as the host on a 1TB HDD. Then the hyper-visor will have multiple VM's running on top of it. I want to setup RAID 1 for this so if one of the HDD's fail there will be another HDD running which has the core hyper-visor and the virtual machines running on it.

Motherboard - N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX (Alvorix)

I have the below slots free
  • 1 PCI Express x16 slot Gen 2 speed
  • 3 PCI Express x1 slots
  • 1 PCI Express x1 mini card socket
 
You don't need a hardware RAID card for a simple RAID 1. Any cheap HBA or software RAID card can do RAID 1 just fine.

1) Are you willing to buy used?
2) Are you comfortable with the command-line?
3) What's your budget?
4) How many hard drives total?

Well I ended up buying this RAID card a few days ago. I have two 1TB HDD's that I want to put in RAID 1. My operating system is a hypervisor (Hyper-V Server 2012 R2) which has multiple virtual machines running on it. So I need to get RAID 1 working for this so my OS and virtual machines are on both HDD's.

I was pointing out that you were using the wrong terminology there.

Well good luck with that highpoint. The reviews seems rather...poor for it.

What terminology was it? Software RAID isn't going to work for my purposes and its slower than hardware RAID, so count that out. The RAID card I choose is because I didn't want to spend like $100+ on a RAID card. It was recommended as well by a few sources from Newegg and such so I'll be testing it out this weekend.
Not sure what the difference between a hardware RAID card and a HBA card is that your referring to though.

FYI just because you are using a piece of hardware does not mean you are using hardware RAID. This card is still using software RAID, which is fine because most affordable RAID cards do.

Also it says it supports Windows Server 2012, however a lot of the newegg reviews say it does not work as a boot device. so you may not be able to run the OS from the RAID 1 drive you create.

When someone says hardware RAID, they're talking about cards with an onboard XOR engine and cache. The card you bought is not hardware RAID. It is fake RAID. Read this article for more info:

you will spend more than $100 on a TRUE hardware raid solution. get adaptec or intel....
