Hey guys

My neighbor is looking for a scanner/copier/printer/fax for around 200. I don't know anything about these kinds of machines so I was wondering if you guys could help me. I did a quick search, but I couldn't find quite what I was looking for.

From what he said, I think he needs to have a better scanner.

Thanks,
A

I've had the Canon Pixma MP530 for about 18 months. It's been a real workhorse with excellent color and B&W printing. The replacement cartridges are cheap and easy to replace. The full bed scanner is quick and accurate, too. I've only needed to send/receive a few faxes, but they worked flawlessly.

Canon's service is top-shelf. A couple of months ago, I heard some odd grinding noises as it printed. I filed a service claim through Canon's website and within 5 days they sent a brand new unit and picked up mine all at no charge. :D

There's an old saying about being a jack-of-all-trades but master of none. Most of the combo units don't score that high in regard to any individual function, but are adequate and space saving if you don't have demanding needs, such as real high-rez scans for Photoshop.

I just inherited a Lexmark X7350 that was being used in hubby's uncle's shop. It would randomly kick out of fax mode, so was unreliable in a situation where they needed to be able to receive faxes 24/7.

I had a cheap HP inkjet printer, haven't had a scanner since I moved off the Mac a couple years ago. I must say that I use the copier feature a lot more than I thought I would. (I'm working on settling an estate, so have lots of forms to be filled out and need to retain copies.)

The Lexmark software is pretty good. I like being able to scan directly to PDF. :) Also, they offer "high yield" ink cartridges with supposedly about double the printing capacity of regular cartridges for just a few dollars more. (Bought one but haven't changed it yet.)

I highly recommend the Canon MP830. Very reliable and very high quality scans. Only a discrete scanner of equal price will be able to surpass the optical characteristics or the MP830.

Good luck.

The Canon Pixma MP830 0583B002 Office All-In-One Printer is ideal for home and small office users. With a 9600 x 2400 color resolution, the PIXMA MP830 is capable of producing true life-like images. The printer features a 48-bit internal scanner that allows you to scan images with a resolution of up to 1200 x 2400 dpi (up to 19,200 x 19,200 dpi interpolated). The MP830 is also capable of sending fax at speeds of up to 33.6 Kbps with the help of the Super G3 fax modem. This printer is equipped with Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) that makes use of the 3,584-nozzle print head that ejects precise, consistent droplets for producing high-quality grain-free images.

This printer provides printing speeds of up to 30 ppm black and 24 ppm color and borderless 4" x 6" photo in approx. 36 seconds. The MP830 is equipped with a PictBridge USB port that enables you to print directly from any compatible camera or DV camcorder. In addition, the printer is capable of printing directly from memory cards with the help of its built-in memory card slot. The printer is also equipped with an auto duplex Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) that can read both sides of a two-sided document. This makes it possible to copy or scan both sides of the paper without the need to flip the pages manually.
