I have been asked to develop a wireless network for a local resort. They own about 15 cabins on a lake and they want wifi network for all of the cabins. Now I'm not the most knowlageable about wireless networks, but I'm willing to learn.

Here is my leet map of the resort. The red boxes are cabins, light green is open grass, dark green is moderate tree growth. Easy enough to walk though, but I doubt LOS is capable from a single tower.

I was looking at some Telex gear, but i dont know what I need.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Do the resort a big favor and hire someone how IS knowledgeable. Not wagging my finger but you don't learn on the job. At least not as the lead. If you plan on charging these folks money, based on your post, you would be doing them a dis-service IMO.

Point to multipoint bridging isn't incredibly hard to setup up however when the wireless environment is complex or complicated it can be difficult to setup reliably.

Someone needs to come out with some equipment and do a decent site survey to see if your going to be able to get some or all of the links up where trees/foliage is in the path. Without cutting down the trees, which is certainly a plausible outcome. Perhaps not to the resort but it's definitely possible that this would be the result of a well done site survey.

Take a finders fee and hire someone who knows what he/she/they is/are doing.
 
Knowing everything about 802.11a/b/g is not necessary to be able to architect a system like this. Knowledge of radio communications is. Go find yourself a wireless engineer!

If it were up to me, I'd wire the cabins together and put up a single bridge to the mainland. That would eliminate problems in the forested area and allow you to have a single wireless link to maintain. Take a look at Smartbridges products, as they have some nice outdoor units almost tailored for this application.

I'm not going to be charging him money. He is a friend of the families and has let us use his boats and water equipment for almost 15 year. I consider this a favor for him and I am wondering how to learn. This isnt a rush job, we have 7 months to get this up. Personaly, I think this is an outstanding job to learn at.

While it could be a good learning opportunity, you really need to consider hiring a consultant or company who can perform an appropriate site survey and ask the right questions about deployment, maintenance, and usage of the system.

Otherwise the project is just going to become an unreliable money pit.
 
Study up by searching other posts and this site for equipment.

The idea about wiring the houses in the trees is good and having a 180deg omni for the open field and even some of the lake would be my first thought. I don't know much either so good luck.
 
Could you clarify something:

Do you want wireless available in that area, or do you want to use wireless to get connectivity to that area? i.e, do you need a point to point across the lake, or do you want clients roaming the field?

The owner would like as much of the grass area and the beach connected. We dont need to have 100% conectivity in the entire area. We dont need access on the water, though it would be nice. I told the owner that I doubted we could get much in the forested area and I did suggest that we wire each of the cabins, even the ones that you can get signal in. The last thing the owner wants to spend his time doing is jacking around with a messed up client when he can just tell them to plug into the lan.
