I dont really want to install linux on my computer yet so Im wondering can I use a live cd without any changes to my computer and can you explain it a little bit I'm a nub and just want to try linux, and if I like it, ill install mandrake 10.0 cds which i have...

So can I burn the live cd to a dvd disc and install programs on the disc to use in my linux state?

will the 4.7 gb cd act like a 4.7 gb hd or what???

No.. the disc doesn't act like a HDD - it still acts like a CDROM

burning a DVD will allow you put a 4.7GB image on there (which would be a lot of software), but, even if you could do some DirectCD like storage, you wouldn't want to.

You can use a USB flash drive as harddrive in Knoppix for your home directory and settings, you could install programs there but you would be extremly limited on space.

If you really want to learn linux the best thing to do would do a full install of it. You won't learn anything from running a livecd, everything is setup for you on boot, no real hands on stuff.

Live CDs are good tools for getting people acquainted with the Linux user interface and programs, as well as the management of the desktop.

Knoppix runs entirely off the CD. It will allow you to access your HD, to open files or save files. But in terms of the OS, it is entirely live-on-disc and will not touch your HD.

Just make sure the CD Drive is before the Hard Drive, and you'll be fine.

Go to http://freshmeat.net and do a search for slax. Burn the iso to a cd and fire it up. Very nice well working live cd that will give you the feel for linux. If you want to do a real install get the iso for yopper and install it, very easy install and works very well to learn on.
