I'm renting about 40 E-350 Based PCs for a client. They only use an internal web app. So I figured I could also use them for mining. Is it possible to use them all without degrading cpu performance... much?

:eek::rolleyes:

E-350 gets a whopping 2.4 kH/sec
*40 = 96 kH/sec

You can get the same hashrate with an old GTX 460,
or 200 kH/sec with an old Radeon 6770.

Why would you bother spending time to setup mining on all those clients for a measly 2.4 kH/sec each?

also, No. mining with a cpu greatly decreases system responsiveness.

I meant using the GPU. It's a 6310

According to the page you posted it gives 12hH/s

12*40=480 kh/sec

That's better than any nvidia card and a 7870, right?

So my question would be, will cpu performance degrade if I use the gpu for mining?

Quick bit of searching shows the 6310 using 18 watts max power. So lets be generous and say 15watts usage while mining.

40*15 = 600 watts.

A single 7950 will hash around the same rate, use under a third of the power and cost <$300. Is it really worth all the trouble setting up mining on 40 machines even if it has no effect on the internal web app?

Any GPU accelerated stuff (including flash based players etc.) will be affected by mining if it's anything like GPU folding.

I don't know, is it?
I've never mined so I don't know if its even possible to sync 40 pcs.

i'm not interested in buying a mining card. I just figured I could use what I have

You're going to point the 40 units to a "pool" for a collective mining. I think terrabyte89 pointed out the facts.

if you are renting them for a client.. you are going to share the profits of ming with the client, right?
