This is so idiotic that it almost sounds like a joke (a teacher, a student and a Linux distro all walk into a bar). Get this, a teacher threatened to call the cops on a student for using Linux in class. No joke. I am not kidding.

After confiscating the disks I called a conference with the student and that is how I came to discover you and your organization. Mr. Starks, I am sure you strongly believe in what you are doing but I cannot either support your efforts or allow them to happen in my classroom. At this point, I am not sure what you are doing is legal. No software is free and spreading that misconception is harmful.

i remember having teachers like that - although not as bad. they're morons that don't know their ass from a hole in the ground on power trips for the most part. that dolt should be fired.
 
It's another old person who doesn't understand new tech. This really doesn't deserve a news article, otherwise my mother would be here.

I really wonder how old she is though. She claims to have used Linux in college (and makes it sound like a drug of some sort), but as pointed out, Linux has changed greatly in a short very period of time.

That is absolutely insane if that is true. I can't believe that teacher has never heard of open source software before.
 
Actually if I were to asked all my former high school teacher, I'd bet more than 90% of them had never heard of any system other than Windows and MS Dos, let alone open source software.

I don't think its strange that many adults out there doesn't know mcuh about Linux or any other OS besides Windows and DOS. Linux isn't exactly the most popular thing among the majority people out there who isn't computer literate. Maybe many may hear that name every now and then, but most wouldn't be bothered to go find out what it is.
 
my girlfriend's friends aren t ready to try living with linux yet but they love to see that compiz cube spin when they come over.

I lol'd @ karen's suggestion that micro$oft would be happy to donate copies of their older operating system.

last time I checked, xp was still selling for $100 per install disk, same as vista home.
 
I am thoroughly amazed if that is true. The amount of ignorance shown while trying to show her own wisdom is just crazy.

Someone should show her Edubuntu. I bet her head would asplode.
 
This can't be true. How can she possibly have used linux in college and now think that offering it for free is illegal? I don't get the crap about kids using linux is holding them back. I personally think Linux is still too hard to use (even though it's light years ahead of where it was 5 years ago), but if a kid can use Linux, and get his work done, then who cares?

Operating systems are a platform to use tools.
 
This was as ass backwards as a letter I've read, someone seriously needs to educate this person asap before she wrecks more innocent minds.
 
If this story is true, and I have my doubts, that teacher was an ass. And a stupid one at that. I am more concerned with that teachers ignorance and stupidity and how it relates to what she is actually supposed to be teaching than this Nix issue however.

The school my kids went to did NOT allow students to pass around burned cd's and dvd's. Their reasoning being, the assumption that the kids were passing around pirated music, porn, games, and movies. Which was predominantly true.

Niether were those kids done some huge disservice by the teachers actions in this case. Most of them would have just fubared the family pc installing it anyway. Some of the ones that did not fubar the family pc, would prolly have removed it once they figured out game X would not run under it. Others would have wondered what the hoopla was about when they figured out it was not really any better than Windows for the typical uses a kid in high school would put to it. A few of the more OS advanced kids, would have prolly enjoyed the challenge of a non MS OS, but those kids prolly already knew how to get a copy of Unbuntu off the net anyway.

To me the nix portion is a non issue, the teachers apparent ignorance and lack of emotional control is the issue. Again, only if the story is true.
 
a. I call shenanigans. Sounds and feels fake.
b. "She" makes it sound like Linux is just general piracy in "her" "we all did it at college" line.
c. As annoying the stupidity displayed by the "teacher" is, by the fourth paragraph of his rant, the columnist had become the absolute biggest Linux-evangelist-zealot stereotype ever. The only thing I could imagine by the time he had gotten to all that bullshit about "YOU TOIL THROUGH YOUR WEARY WAKING LIFE AS A SLAVE TO THE CORPORATION OF WILLIAM GATES" was that scene in the Matrix where Morpheus is addressing that weird Zion rave from a stone outcropping...except instead of Lawrence Foster, it's a pasty, pale, overweight guy in a XXXL Tux t-shirt...

Evangelists of any kind annoy the fuck out of me, but I guess it's only the Mac ones that get the rest of you guys. IMO the hardcore Linux dudes are so, so much worse.
 
Interesting article, but the guy spouted too much Linux Rhetoric for my taste. Linux, in all it's forms, will never be as user friendly as traditional operating systems. Whether that's down to Microsoft's business strategy or not is a moot point.
 
Guess i wont point out the free anti-virus softwares, the antispyware's or FREE demos of games and trial software and can you say Openoffice.org..Even Microsoft is going to soon if not allready giving out some free new OS so how much do should i pay MS for my FREE Updates for windows and the videoc ard drivers and such..mebe ive said to much Oh Snap

Ubuntu is so easy a caveman could do it. I make my living off of supporting Microsoft platforms, but all my home machines have been dual booted with Ubuntu. With the recent update to 8.10, it even supports the 4850/4870 right from the default install.

Heck even my mom likes it, I let her use my laptop recently.

The really sad part is the letter from Ken Starks is just as asinine as the teacher's, but obviously written by someone with less education. While I think the teacher was completely ignorant of the use and facts of Linux, Ken comes across like one of those televangelist. Ken seems to think that teaching the children on Linux and then throwing them into the real world where 90% of business workstations are running Windows is a smart thing to do!

I too feel as though this may be shens. The thing that did it for me was the fact that she used it in college. Up until that point I would have said it was the real deal. But who knows maybe she just really IS that stupid.
 
Despite the bloggers arrogant (yet, to an extent, true) statements, I believe this is real. There are too many factors in the content of Karen's e-mail which leads me to believe she is quite uninformed to the world of open source software.

Hilarious email, very funny because of the the incredible ignorance shown by Karen. Sadly though the response by the Helios blogger was almost as ignorant-funny as the original letter.

It's like watching two people trying to shoot each other with bows and arrows from opposite ends of a football field after having blinded themselves by poking their own eyes out.

That depends on what you're trying to do. For most of what I do on any given day Linux is faster and easier. As for whether or not this article is fake and about how he "spouted too much Linux Rhetoric" first it's not fake, second his charity is based around Linux so get over yourself.

As for whether or not the teacher is older, that doesn't really matter too much to how insane her response was. HeliOS isn't exactly a young guy himself.

Unless you're on the IT staff, why would someone using a business workstation need to be an expert on Windows? Skills learned on Linux and Open Office can be translated into Windows, or Mac, or even vice-versa.

I help run a computer lab at a non-profit for disadvantaged kids and we run Macs and PC's running both Windows and Linux. Basically, whatever gets donated to us. The most important thing for us is to just get the kids in and sit him/her down in front of a computer, any computer, and teach them basic Internet and office productivity software for starters. The ones who have been coming for a while get into more advanced topics like multimedia production and HTML.

That's just bullshit. I use Ubuntu at work, and I frequently have issues with installing software...and yes, I mean even when it's software that comes through the built in installer. Does it work most of the time? Yes it does, but it there are plenty of times that it does not.

As linux distros go, Ubuntu is top notch, but it is not as user friendly as Windows.

Did I mention that I've seen Ubuntu completely lock up (kinda like the BSOD without the blue screen)? It's rare, but aside from when I had my video card improperly seated, I haven't seen a BSOD in years.

I like Ubuntu for development, because our software is running on solaris, and it's just easier to set up a test environment on Linux that mirrors the various servers, but I wouldn't dream of handing Linux to any of my friends or relatives.
 
"I tried Linux during collage." yeah right, if she is young enough to have done that, she would know computers better. I'd say this is a joke and not something that really happened.
