Hey guys I might end up buying a Dell instead of going custom because I will get another 1300 dollars for it..

Will I able to run Linux on it? Most likely Mandrake 10.* Thanks a lot.

It should be pretty straight forward. Didn't have any issues with linux and some dell workstations at work. You should be good, unless you got an ATI card, then don't expect too much.
 
What will happen with an ATi Card .

ATI's linux drivers are just garbage, over the years i've heard so many ati driver horror stories it's not even funny. Problems with nvidia's drivers are extremely rare in my experience.

The short course is that it's just more of a pain to get a working system with ATI.
 
Actually, lately ATI's have been working alright. As long as you use xorg you should have no problems, however 3D acceleration is another story. On anything over an r250 (Radeon 9500 & above)
 
I'm in an Advanced Linux Administration class and we've been using Slackware 10.0 on Dells. It works just fine.
 
are u using ISDN? a friend of mine couldnt get it to work in either mandrake or slack
 
I thought the issues with ati and linux was the all-in-wonders, or just any video capture.
 
Well the issue I had with my old ATI 9500 Pro was very poor 3D performance. Everything else ran great (2D that is). I recently bought a new video card and I went the Nvidia route due to ATI's lackluster performance.
 
Generally, modern Dells aren't going to give you much trouble (especially if you stay away from the no-name, POS modems, scanners & printers they bundle). I'd probably try to get the sales rep on record about Linux compatability, just to be safe tho.


...and you don't want to bother with ATI fro Linux. Honestly.
 
I run FreeBSD on an optiplex GX260 (and I've used an GX270). No problems at all, but. If it has an intel integrated graphics controller, you have to update the bios to something semi-recent and change the allocated memory from 1 to 8 mb in order to get an acceptable resolution and color depth in X. Not that it sounds like you'll be hitting this particular problem.
 
LINUX on a DELL is no problem, But like everyone stated before, if you are gamming or doing high end graphics and such, the general ATI drivers will not do too well ( they are great for your average workstation though ) I would go with a Nvidia card.

I've done it on an inspiron and it worked, except the NIC was a 1000/100/10, as opposed to just 100/10. It took alittle bit for me to understand how to do drivers, but got it working in less that 30 min.
 
ISDN will work on Mandrake, but not necessarily out of the box - it's a bit broken due to the MDK guys not having an ISDN connection or any hardware to test. Some MDK users who *do* have ISDN have been working on it, but it's not perfect. 10.2 might improve. Can't speak for SuSE, but I'd imagine it's the same, you *can* get it to work with some effort.
 
I've thrown FreeBSD 5 on just about every Dell rackmount server I've gotten my hands on. Runs just great.
