When my internet is connected directly to the modem I have no problem downloading windows updates. However when my computer is connected to the router (linksys wrt54g) I can not download anything on the windows website. Never seen this before...I just did a system restore on my computer...fyi

Also, I can download anything else but windows updates if the router is connected.

Just guessing but your router might be blocking some ports, if you can access regular websites then 80 should be open, make sure 443 is as well.

Have you tried giving the router a factory reset? (the small hidden button usually in the back).

Try updating the router with the latest firmware.

What make/model "modem" do you put it behind? If it's a DSL modem, it may be a combo modem/router...already doing NAT. That can end up giving you wonky behavior.
