Ok going to MOD my webcam and want to swap out my LED. the problem is how do I figure or find out what size it is (ie. amps) not the actual size. How do I go about this.
 
With the exception of Luxeon superbright LEDs and some tiny surface mount LED's, almost every LED out there is rated between 20-30mA. And in almost all consumer equipment, they're run closer to 1mA so they don't blind the user.

In almost all cases, you can replace a LED with another and it'll work fine.

BUT, if you replace a red LED with a blue LED in a "3.3V" circuit, there's the random chance that the blue LED won't light up - red LEDs run off around 2V and blue LEDs run around 3.6 volts. You can run a red LED off 3.3V by using a series resistor to absorb the extra 1.3 volts, but you'll never be able to run a 3.6V LED off 3.3V, it just won't light up.

Just replace the LED. If it works, cheer. If it doesn't work, reverse the LED (you might have it backwards). If it still doesn't work, pout and put the old LED back in. :D
 
I was alos thinking of putting a super bright white so I have lite on cam always but thats another issue I have to address
 
You can put a super-bright white LED in, but don't swap it into the place of the old one--instead, wire it up with a series resistor directly to the 5V and GND lines of the USB cable.
 
I've got a quick related Q: I've two bags of LEDs here both rated at 30ma and a max of 3.5v (color is UV and Blue) and I want to replace the green power LED in my case with the blue, I can do that right? Since the LED runs off of the mobo header it does 3.3 right?
 
if you have a multimeter you should check what the mobo header puts out and decide off that.

ok now where is a good site to figure out what resistors are needed or perhaps a scematic if someone care to throw one together I appreciate and thank you in advance
 
ok just one more question if I already have the stock led in there and I add another white led will that work with the 5 volts coming in or will I have to take one out?
 
try to see:

i would guess that if you connect them in series it would work.

if not, connect them in parallel.

remember to always try both polarities on the leds.
