I showed a couple of my friends (all windows people... some are about to switch over, though :p ) how nicely Launchbar works, and was wondering... is there any software for windows that's somewhat equivalent??

the little icon thingy? the creators of windowsblind has a program similar to it. The company is Stardock. Try googling it.

thanks, guys,

but I meant something like the program "Launchbar" itself... something where you press a certain sequence (apple+space in launchbar to activate it), type in the name of the program you want to open, then press enter so the program opens!

Does any exist for windows?

Yes, it's called run, and it's in the start menu

Run is nowhere nearly as efficient and versatile as Butler/QuickSilver/Launchbar/etc. Even though the idea is similar, they're beyond compare.

You hit a set keystroke (I use cmd space), and up pops a text field. Type stuff in and you get a real-time search for preconfigured locations. The various apps that do this do it a bit differently, but some can search for metadata and such, I believe. It acts a lot like iTunes' search function, but in some of them you can have it less "precise" (not demanding 100% correct typing). So if I want to launch Mplayer (for instance), I hit cmd space, m, p, l, enter. Piece of cake, and much more useable than Run.

In QuickSilver, you can also do a lot of cool stuff... let's say I want to open the Mplayer package, I can do the same as before, but instead of enter, I hit tab and up pops a text field for what I want to open it with. Type f, i, n, d and it'll find Finder to open it with. Again, a piece of cake.

Butler, another such app, also lets you place complete keyboard shortcuts (I use alt (plus shift) i/b for typing [b/i] and [/b/i] in vB/PHPBB/etc forums. It's really nifty. I also love using F9 for iTunes play/pause... And Butler also lets you execute AppleScripts, of course, as well as shell scripts, and you can use clickable screen corners.

How this is superior to Run should be obvious by now. ;)

It's called AppRocket. Functionality similar to QuickSilver/LaunchBar... not as good, but as both a windows and os x quicksilver user, I love it ;)
