lapping sandpaper source?

Hi all,

Anyone got a link or two to an online vendor that carries industrial grade sandpaper? Tried searching the forums but didn't really come up with anything.

I don't know how relevant this is to where you are, but around here we have a Lee Valley Tools (http://www.leevalley.com/) that sells as low as 0.5 micron (somewhere around 5000 grit) sharpening paper (i.e. sandpaper). Worked good when I lapped my old video card HSF.
 
Tried my local Ace, but t'was a no-go for anything above 1500 grit. Looks like the same applies to their online store. If all else fails, I could take a run up to the Lee Valley store in Ottawa (I'm near Massena in NY).

Yea, most hardware places don't have anything too high. Home Depot only goes up to 600 o.o
 
I've had troubles finding above 1500.

It works well enough, but I'd like to go higher just for the extra e-penis.

Are you trying to make a mirror or lap your heatsink?
There is a difference...
Just because it is nice and shiny doesn't mean that it is FLAT...
 
You really don't need to go any higher than 1500. As long as it's dead flat, a mirror finish is only for looks (which will quickly degrade/corrode) and will only make you feel warm and fuzzy, it doesn't do anything once you actually put thermal paste on.
 
Wal-Mart (if there is one local to you) in the automotive section by the body paints supplies. That is where I got all of mine (upto 2000grit).

That's where I got mine. I think it was 3M wet/dry stuff. They also had a 'variety pack' with three sheets of various grit, rather than 3 sheets of one grit.
 
Yes I had to look forever to find any high-grit paper. Like a couple people said, try your local auto-body store. Thats the only place that I could find anything. It doesn't need to be too high though, just as long as the IHS is completely flat. The thermal paste will fix the rest. If none of that works, you could always remove the IHS....;)
