Hello all, I just purchased 4 kingston 2gb dimms for my Asus p5ke. This is the kit that I purchased the ram spd reads 5-5-5-18. No matter what I do I cannot get the memory to reach 4-4-4-12, I continued to raise DRAM voltage until I got the system to boot (1.95 volts) but once I do something intensive the system crashes. I have a new install of windows 7 64 bit. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
 
it's rated for 2.1v, try 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1v. Also try updating your chipset drivers (through intel). I couldn't get my ram to behave (it was rated for 7-7-7-24 @ 1.5v but the best I could get was 8-8-8-28 @1.8v) and then I installed the latest chipset drivers for something else and when I tried fooling around with the RAM earlier today it now does exactly what it's rated for for 10 passes of memtest86+.
 
I will give that a go, I just updated my bios before the windows 7 install...now that you mention it I'm not sure about the chipset driver. I downloaded the latest from the asus website but I notice that sometimes their drivers aren't current (had that problem with jmicron storage controller driver). Where else can I download the latest chipset driver? I will also try increasing voltage, I was just a bit concerned about running it at max voltage...will running it at max volts cause a problem in the long-term?
 
Latest intel chipset driver installed, ram set to 2.1 volts. Seems to be working okay now at 4-4-4-12, mem test currently running; so far so good. Still curious ram reliability (long term use) at 2.1 volts, but I guess if it's rated for it...Thanks :) Oddly enough I didn't have to change voltage on my Crucial sticks, just set to 4-4-4-12 and that was it. Out of curiosity, does anyone know what made the difference with the Kingston sticks?
 
Well looks like i've got a few errors...back to the drawing board...
 
try playing around with your northbridge voltage. It might not be getting enough juice for 4 sticks or something.

I'm up to 2.15 volts on the ram now and re-ran mem test for 15mins, no errors this time. I'm concerned about having to go so high on the ram voltage. any other ideas?

NB voltage = memory controller voltage, not memory voltage. With 4 modules, you typically need more voltage on the memory controller. 2-4 steps above the stock setting will likely do it.
 
Thanks...I have no experience changing nb voltage. I raised it .15 volts to no avail, I will take it up another notch and give it another go. Right now i'm running the RAM at default spd (5-5-5-18).
 
As long as you have a fan on the NB and/or good case airflow, you should easily be able to do as high as 1.35v - 1.4v safely if needed.
 
I dont't have a cooler on the north bridge but I have pretty good airflow in my case...I am running a pdke board. Would you recommend I get a cooler? My case (Antec P160) is pretty tidy cable wise and I have 2 100mm fans.
 
I'd use a "touch test". Run the system hard with the side panel on. Open it up after a bit of HEAVY memory usage and touch the NB cooler. If it's uncomfortably hot, put a fan on it or an aftermarket cooler. If it's not uncomfortable to the touch, leave it as is as long as it is stable.
