I have a Netgear FVS318. I am thinking of getting the Netgear WNDR3700 and was wondering if it is worth keeping the old router in the mix? I don't use the VPN part of it, but have felt that it is a good firewall router.

Do I keep it and run the cable modem to it, and then the new WNDR3700 after that?

Notoriously slow model, outdated. Only thing I can think of, as a reason to keep it, is if you need to do IPSec VPN tunnel endpoint. In which case, getting a WNDR3700 for the replacement wasn't the right choice.

I wouldn't daisy chain with your new router.....you'll end up double NAT'ing, and have a big bottleneck.

Maybe keep it as a backup, in case your new one dies...you'll have a stand in until you get another new one.
 
No, I don't think you should.

Try this - run your current network with your old router. Do some speed tests.

Then run your network with the new router only. Then do some speed tests, you should see a fairly good jump.

That should show you how slow the old one was.
 
Thanks. Did not know it was know to be slow. I will have to do the test that CiscoInside suggested. But either way I will take it of the mix and keep it as a backup as suggested.
