I just installed Xp on a new hard drive. It's a seagate. I originally had a maxtor in there but it was acting up.

I have a Dell XPS 600. After I installed xp from a windows recovery disk it will not let me download any updates. I have never seen this before. This is a brand new install on a brand new hard drive. When I try to go to the windows update website it sends me to google. When I try to download any service packs it acts like there is nothing there....like it doesnt accept the .exe format. But on the other hand I can download some other programs that have that exstension.

Did you disconnect the old drive from the motherboard before the XP install on the new hard drive?
If not, did you go to the BIOS and made the new drive to be the boot drive before the XP install?
If not, that's most likely your problem.
 
if you're being misdirected when going to a specific website, it usually means there's something wrong with your DNS service or HOSTS file either at your computer or at your internet provider.

Go to network properties and see if your DNS is set to auto. If it's pointing at a specific IP address, chances are either you set it up for your router, or you got a malware in your computer than forced your browser to use a malicious DNS server.

If your DNS is fine, go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc and open HOSTS with notepad and make sure URL aren't being forced to go to another IP address or web site.

You might want to give superantispyware and Avira a run on your computer to inspect it for malware too.

I know you said it's a fresh recovery, but you never know.

Also I opened that file and it doesn't seem like there anything forcing it. What exactly would that look like?

Thanks for the help guys I figured out the problem.

Problem:

After using the Dell system restore disk to reinstall XP it would not let me download updates and most .exe files. Also, when I went to the windows updates page it would redirect me to google.

Solution:

I isolated the problem by disconnecting the linksys router and running my connection direct to the modem. After that I was able to install XP updates and the latest service packs. I have since reconnected the router and everything seems to be working fine.
 
That's odd. Why would your router redirect your DNS addresses? I'd reset it to factory default and reconfigure it or find a firmware update to wipe it and reinstall it just to be sure everything's ok.
 
It sounds like you might have a rootkit/bootsector virus to me. I don't recall where I read about it, but I know there are several viruses out there that will survive a simple format and reinfect the partition after an OS is installed on it. Unless you destroyed the boot sector (low level format and/or deleted/recreated all partitions) the virus could have been able to survive a simple format/reinstall of the OS and reinfect you. From what I recall, only Windows XP is susceptible to it, due to the way the bootloader works.
