I have this old box lying around(my first machine) and i figure id turn it into a little network runner.

SPEC:

Athlon 700mhz
128mb pc100 ram
16 gig 5400 Hard Drive
Vodoo 16meg 3dfx card
pci lan cards.

Basically i want this little machine to run as the main internet machine so my pc doesnt have to be on all the time and i want to use some of that 16 gig to store music and programs etc incase anything goes sour.

some Q's

What should i install on this little box?
Should i get more ram? I can get a 64mb chip for £8 which isnt alot
It will be running XP Pro unless i can get a suggestion for something else.

That's more than enough. XP will be a little sluggish booting with 128 MB, but it'll be fine once loaded provided you don't start dumping a lot of extra crap on the system. A little more wouldn't hurt though. *nix would probably be a little smoother, but tougher to fileshare MP3s etc with the rest of your network.

If you wanted it purely for a firewall/router, I'd say Smoothwall, IPcop or ClarkConnect linux.

However since you also want to use it to share files, I'd say go download a copy of Fedora Core 2 (or another distro that you fancy) and install that with IP Routing, DHCP, DNS (if you want) and enabled firewall. Setting up Samba so your windows boxes can connect is rather easy with today's distros and if you need any help, ask here or try linuxquestions.org =)
