Is this a decent card?

nope, that card is considered "slow" for that price tag....yes grab the 6800gt for a few bucks more, or better yet, grab the 6800NU for a few bucks less..which will outperform that card..and that card is OEM too..hahaha.

For AGP, Yes, the 6800 series is better, PCI-e for a single card, it's X850XT all the way.

get an X800XL, PCI-E is 15 cheaper, AGP is 10 more, very good card at a good price

the nvidias have pixel shader 3.

i would save up for a 6800gt, but if you really need a new one get the 6800nu(and maybe some more ram with the saved $ :D).

Are you KIDDING ME!>? Oh my lord, people, nothing uses the PS 3.0 spec, it's not necessary. And besides, the 6800 series can't run it at playable framerates realistically, and I know about FarCry, thanks. Your argument about PS 3.0 isn't useful. ATi Still kicks nVidia's ass in FarCry...

Don't forget Splinter Cell 3.

....but he said it must be AGP. I would definitely go for the 6800nu or if he has the extra cash, the 6800GT.

people like you can also be heard saying shit like this...

"Oh my lord, people, nothing uses 64bit cpu's, its not necessary..."

just because its not being widely used now, doesnt mean that its never going be used genius.

save some extra cash and get a 6800gt.

blackhawk and project..would u guys please shut up, blackhawk, you dont know crap about ps3.0 or w/e....ur just a phanboi period..and project..ur an ati phanboi too..ati kicks nvidia's ass in far cry..woohoooo I wouldn't call 3 fps "an ass kicking"

Now how about we discuss the price/performance ratio in helping this guy choose his card instead of starting a flame war ok ok???? cool.

by the time it is used, not only will faster cards be out, but the games USING it will be to graphically extensive for our video cards.

SM3.0 on current cards is a fluff feature.

ATM, yes 64 bit CPUs arnt necissary, then again, there must be a reason AMD pwns Intel in gaming and video encoding ;)

like I said, the AGP version is $10 more. Which is still very good. Look haed enough you can find it for $300

And the borked video processor too..what's your point?

Pixel Shader 3 is currently worthless. When one buys a video card, it should be based on features that are currently usable, not touted as being usable in the future, or usable with games sometime in the future, or supported in a later set of drivers. Many of us who DID buy a 6800GT card because of its additional promise of nVidia PureVideo were sorely disappointed. In the same vein, I'd consider buying a PS 3 card when it is a useable feature and not before.

To the original poster: A Radeon X800XL AGP can be had for between $309-315 at NewEgg, and beats the snot out of the X800SE, since it has 16 graphics pipelines. It is a far better buy. It is also faster than the 6800 Non-Ultra cards; having had one, and now having a PCIe X800XL, I have seen this firsthand. Personally, I'd choose the ATI card over a 6800GT as well, but I use my computer to play back video too, not just games, and the ATI is a far better card for that, showing lower CPU usage. If all you do is play Doom 3 or OpenGL games, the 6800GT is the card for you. If you play DirectX 9 games, or if gaming isn't the only thing you do with your PC, I believe the X800XL to be the better choice.

Windows XP 64-bit uses 64-bit CPU's and it is currently shipping to retailers (apparently some MSDN subscribers already have it). Show me a game that is in the process of shipping to retailers that uses Pixel Shader 3.0.

There isn't one. The closest is Chronicles of Riddick, which uses a setting they call Pixel Shader 2.0++, and turning it on changes a 6800 card of any class from fast to crippled.

Pixel Shader 3.0 has been out for a year now. No games are available yet, and nobody has promised a game that has it, or made press statements that their upcoming game will have it AFAIK. Before you go insulting people with your sarcasm, perhaps you can give us all an example of when this technology is going to be used....will it be before the current 6800 line of cards is obsoleted by nVidia's next-gen models? I wouldn't bet the ranch. Until it is used, a feature you can't use in the real world isn't a feature; it's a marketing blurb.

Sorry, I posted a pci-e ati card in my post above. Disregard it. LoneWolf made a good suggestion on the XL, and Compusa has them in stock all the time at $299.00

oops, misread your post. Then I agree with you Hate, if he wants to spend closer to 200 get the 6800nu, if 300 then the X800XL. :)

nCantador nailed it.
For <$300, get a 6800NU and try to softmod it. Even if you can't, great price/performance.
For ~>$300, get an AGP X800XL.

I think it's smart to move to pcie now. For sure. And both cards are good....we've been through this so much. SM3.0 isn't huge right now, but it may get bigger in the future so it's more future proof. And let's not forget Ati will be implementing it in their next gpu. :)

I guess the card is ok, but if u would add another few bucks you can grab yourself a 6800GT which perform heaps better.

how bout this.
if you play direct x(hl2,etc) games more pick ati

if you're going to sli or play opengl(d3, quake 4, etc) more pick nvidia.

easy.

If you like ATI this is what you want unlock the extra pipes, overclock it, and you've got yourself an x800xt.

If you like Nvidia try this, you have less memory, but you can also unlock the extra pipes on it and run at at GT speeds,

I love choices :D
sorry to burst your bubble, but the X800Pro PCI'e do not unlock at all. That was only for VIVO AGP cards back before an XT ever was. Back when all there was were X800Pro's and XT PE cards.

Thanks for pointing that out, but I had already caught myself and posted the correction.

easy.

Just an FYI, apparantly the newest refresh of ATI's (X800XL, X850s) work with AMR
